Somebody scored on Craigslist

#1

Post by bradflinders »

I was supposed to meet a guy in St Louis today to see some cans he had for sale. I get an e-mail last night that the cans had been sold. He had a Bluebonnet cone with great color and no oxidation to the gold, Pilsers cone, Altes cone, Griesedieck Crowntainer and a Hudepohl cone for $400. I'd been talking to the guy for several days trying to find a time to meet him that fit with his schedule and then he sells the cans. Bummer!

When a hot lead pops up like that, you have to jump on it quick. Amazing how fast the word can get out in those situations.

A year or so ago, an HVAC guy texted me a pic of five cans he found in a crawl space. Two Red Top OI cans and three Pabst OI cans, one of which was an Old Tankard. I rearranged my schedule and met him within a few hours.

Sorry to hear you missed out on the cone deal. If all those cans were nice, that was quite the buy at that price.

Just noticed that as well. Buyer certainly didn't waste any time going for the flip.

It's possible he got enough interest that he realized they were worth much more, did you tell him you would buy them or were you just going to look? That sure is a sweet bluebonnet, and I always wanted one of those Pilsers hi pros, much cooler than the jspouts.

St. Louis area is a tough place to troll for cans. There are way too many guys out there chasing them. I used do it half-heartedly and made one nice score, but gave up on it years ago. The competition is heavy. Only nice scores I’ve made in recent years have been word of mouth that nobody else knew about.

The seller listed 6 cones all at the same time, including the Bluebonnet. Basically the cans mentioned in the opening post. Some quick math adds up to $1,470.13 in sales on those cans. Minus 15% for Ebay and Paypal fees, he likely will end up with $1,249.61. Minus the $400 paid, = profit of $849.61

Of Note: The sellers history, going back over a year, is all beer cans. So, whoever he is, not his first rodeo.

I'm sure somebody in here knows who he is. The Sellers name looks familiar, I think I've dealt with him before, Wonder if he's a member in here? Maybe he's reading this now?

I know the seller , been to 100s of the same shows,
as good a person you'll ever meet .
obviously the unscrupulous seller is to blame for Brad's grief
Not sure where this thread is trying to go ...
but someone needs to quit prancing around the campfire and spit it out .

Merry Christmas

Unless I am missing something here, neither the buyer nor seller behaved in an unethical manner. When I sell things on craigslist, I use a "first come, first served" approach. I have tried in the past to hold something for a day(s) only to have the potential buyer break off communication. Sometimes these deals work out, sometimes they do not. I am sure Brad has participated in many good deals in the past and will enjoy many good deals in the future. This just wasn't one of them.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

Nothing to see here. Non-collector Craigslist seller shops some cans around. High bidder gets them and flips them. Other guys are disappointed. Happens all the time everywhere. As I stated above, the St Louis area just has a lot of competition in this arena.
