Status of USBC Supplemental Updates.......An incredible effort
The BCCA Product Development team continues to do an amazing job updating the online USBC Supplements with additional and/or new photos. Here is the .pdf that shows exactly how many cans have been updated. I'd ask that you continue to assess any cans in your collections that might not have already been added. Never assume the team has gotten it unless you see it posted/added. Jim Wolf and the others on the team do their best to make sure the imagery boxes are available at numerous shows. Take advantage of this effort to keep us all up-to-date with all the cans in this hobby.
Please take the time to thank Bruce Gregg, Jim Wolf and others from the BCCA Product Development team if you happen to see them at a show. Their amazing efforts deserve much appreciation.
Here are some quick figures:
USBC VOL. 1
Cans pictured in USBC 7116
Cans updated to date 4626
Total New and Updated 5125
USBC VOL. 2
Cans pictured in USBC 6949
Cans updated to date 2724
Total New and Updated 3559
NEW CANS DATABASE : 22,960 CANS ENTERED TO DATE

Thanks to everybody for keeping at this. We can talk about lots of ways to expand/save the hobby but in the end I think the best thing we can do is document the crap out of it.

Re: Status of USBC Supplemental Updates.......An incredible effort
A couple of additional notes:
- Most of the flats, cones and quarts are updated. There are quite a few new cans added. As we now have back panel images, I think we will find a large number of additional cans that have variances that were not apparent with the original single image. Should you find those, please let us know and we will find a way to get them imaged.
- we will be comparing the cans in the database with the Lilek books and composite lists for cones maintained by Jim Hall and quarts from Charlie Bacon. Finding the missing cans may be a challenge; stay tuned for a request for some of the missing cans.
- We are starting to look to upgrade the program so that you can access it from your phone and to make the ability to track the cans in your collection.
- We have also begun to tackle additional memorabilia such as foam scrapers, TOCs, etc.
If any of you want to help with any of this, please let us know.
Thanx.

At the last board meeting, Jim Wolf indicated that what he needs most of all would be additional people who can crop, edit, etc. the raw images into the defined format for addition to the supplement. I am also sure that Jeff Galloway could use help with the backlop of pictures he has for the new cans database.
Jim himself is focusing on taking the five images of the tab tops, both for tabs which are in the book and for addiitons. He also takes the photobox on the road to (drivable, from Maryland) regional shows and takes pictures of stuff that local collectors bring.
The John Page built photoboxes have streamlined the taking of photos, but the editing process is still laborious.

I'll be glad to help with photo cropping. How do I get a hold of Jim Wolf?

Re: Status of USBC Supplemental Updates.......An incredible effort
So they will take pictures at regional shows? When are they heading to the Pacific Northwest? I personally can’t make it to canventions due to work contract issues and have never seen them out my way? I have many many unlisted cans I would love to get pictured. Is that something that may happen in the future?

(drivable, from Maryland). Also, box was at Portland. Committee likely would need a west coast volunteer prior to considering building (and buying) another photobox.

Yes.....I saw the one at Portland canvention, but was unable to access it since my shelf cans were a couple hours away at the time and I was way too busy selling several thousand non-shelf cans at the time. I wish I went to more west coast shows or I would volunteer my services. Any good plans out there for a light box I could build and do it myself?kruegerbock wrote:(drivable, from Maryland). Re: Status of USBC Supplemental Updates.......An incredible effort
Eric Claussen (sp?) built his own photobox and was able to submit pictures of hundreds of 16oz. cans that are now on the site. The boxes the supplement guys use have a turntable that is attached to a laptop to reduce the time required to take multiple images. That build would be a little trickier.

Re: Status of USBC Supplemental Updates.......An incredible effort
I visited the supplemental to book #1 for the first time.
A lot of great work being done there! WOO HOO!
No disrespect intended, and this is not a knock on the volunteers or the large amount of work being done by them.
That being said, I was surprised at how few of the missing cone tops have actually been pictured. There are so many.
I was going page by page, and not seeing variations that should be in there. Major variations.
***- wondering if there was going to be an effort made to differentiate (actually list what the differences are) between some of the look alike cans/cones. Example: the 2 Mineral spring cones pictured. What is the difference?
***- to remove the cans/cones from the book that do not exist?
Example: 178-30, the green Peerless cone that is listed as IRTP.
***- to put cans back in the update, that have been removed. Example: Old Milwaukee 107-31. That can exists, I have a dumper.
(pictured today on RB site, 12-7-18)
My sincerest apologies if I have offended anyone. That was not my intent.
I am speaking from ignorance.
Question: there must be someone, or groups of people looking to identify these unlisted, unpictured variations.
Jim Hall would be a huge help/resource for the unlisted cones. He has many unlisted cones that need to be pictured.
Cheers,
Neil Kanetzke
Ps. I also have many unlisted cans.

Is there a thread already here on R/B site pertaining to unlisted cans?, if so, could someone provide a link, if not shouldn't one be started?

I think John Page still has a lot of the cones in KC area collections to redo or get pictures of for the first time. They've done the bulk of the flats in that area for sure.

Re: Status of USBC Supplemental Updates.......An incredible effort
Mike Newton in Ft. Wayne built a photo box using the general specifications of the BCCA produced boxes. Results are good. Distance between camera and the can, and the quality of the lighting are the key concerns.

There are a lot of cones that have been shot but not entered yet. I had 4 Blatz cones photographed at Cleveland that haven't appeared yet. Flats that were shot in Milwaukee appeared this summer. I had close to 100 Wisconsin Flats photographed at Omaha and they are starting to now appear. Slow process but worth the wait.

Re: Status of USBC Supplemental Updates.......An incredible effort
To expand on what Al and bigcitydave said, we have a lot of cans that have been photographed that are not on the site yet. I currently have about 350-400 cans that I am in the middle of processing to get inserted. I appreciate everybody that has brought cans to shows to get photographed.
It may help to understand how these cans are processed before they appear in the supplement.
Many cans are easy to get right on the site. They are in good condition, are a new variation, or are in fact the actual can that was originally photographed for the book.
Cans that are in lesser condition, rolled or new lids, I put aside for obvious reasons and come back to them later. It is always our hope to get a grade 1 or better example of a can. Originality is also important when dealing with transitional cansas well.
We also received many cans that were shot before we addressed that category. So as I go through those categories and start to populate them, I am going back and looking at the cans we have saved. Many times I am able to upgrade these images. It also helps to find the original can that was photographed so that I know what variation it is. This keeps me from having to delete images later.I do keep all cans photographed and try to get them in as time permits.
As was pointed out in the progress report, we have a long way to go for Volume 1. I think the percentages for the flats and cones are a little optimistic.
We have quite a few places to get photos from that are major holdings of cans. These will hopefully get done in the near future.
As always, if anybody has questions, comments or cans for us to shoot, feel free to send me a message.

Re: Status of USBC Supplemental Updates.......An incredible effort
It is amazing how time consuming it is to add new photos. For me to take a photo of 24 cans process the photos assign proper/new numbers to the cans and enter them in the database takes about 3 hours. Then there will be the time getting pics onto the BCCA website ( a work in progress for the non USA cans) The good news is every photo makes the can database even better.

Re: Status of USBC Supplemental Updates.......An incredible effort
Until you've played with images yourself for a personal database, you really can't appreciate the amount of time and effort being put in by the Supplement Team. Yes, their image taking might be somewhat automated but those images still need to be edited to meet the standards required for the Supplements. Then they have to be added to the database file so you can access them. Here's an example of just one page, the then and now of it.
If you try to access the Supplement and it's slow or now responding, there's a very good chance it's being worked on. Be patient, try again later.
Also, got this from Jim Wolf. All Pull Tabs go into the Volume II Supplement. All Sta-Tabs will go into the New Cans Database.
