The Oldest Brewed here, Exported there.....
I was noticing I had a respectable amount of "export" cans. They fell into 3 general catagories:
1. An American brand brewed here and exported to a foreign country- I think of the Olympia Dry as pretty typical of this group - Brewed in Tumwater, WA and sent to Japan with Japanese writing on the can.
2. A foreign brand brewed in America and sent back to a foreign country - I have several cans brewed in Seattle by Rainier and in Portland by G. Heileman that are Taiwanese and Japanese brands brewed here and sent back to their respective country.
3. American brands brewed overseas and sold overseas - I think of brands like Colt 45 brewed in England, Lone Star brewed in the Philippines and Canadian Budweiser brewed by Molson.
My question: What is the oldest American can that was clearly an export can in any of the three catagories? (NOT counting WWII cans/military issue W/D free cans)
Thanks.......
Eric Palmer

The Royal cone top from the mid to late 30's was made for export to the Philippines.

Re: The Oldest Brewed here, Exported there.....
The earliest one I think I have other than the WWII olive drab cans is this post WWII Schilitz - Dated "(c) 1946 JOS. SCHLITZ BREWING COMPANY" - has "WITHDRAWN FREE OF INTERNAL REVENUE TAX FOR EXPORTATION" along the left side of the seam, but a "DISREGARD ..." lid. Don't know too much about the can - assumed it was bound for Mexico?
Expired once again in Portland ...

Not older than Royal, but here is another great Export can from Emil Sick.

Re: The Oldest Brewed here, Exported there.....
Here's a prewar Diehl's bulb top from Defiance. All the Diehl's without an alcohol statement have the "Export Beer" verbiage on the rear. Their is also an earlier short run bulb with "Packed for Export Only" as well that I don't have an image of.
I was always under the impression that the "Export" on these meant that it was exported to another state since Ohio at the time required the 3.2% to 7% wording.

There are 1936 Pabst Exports that are WF.
"Although the cans will be of no value after opened, their cost is expected to be small..." Iowa: June 22, 1935
Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

The Royal maybe the oldest. The withdrawn free Buckingham ales found in Canada are fairly early.

Re: The Oldest Brewed here, Exported there.....
Lilek #643 Pabst Export must be a 1935 can. The normal IRTP version (#642) carries the 1935 canning code, and #643 appears to pre-date #642. I never noticed this before, but #643 still carries the U-Permit number that was on the full-length opener cans but is absent on #642. #644 carries the 1935 canning code as well.

Re: The Oldest Brewed here, Exported there.....
I had a Schlitz Sunshine Vitamin D low pro cone (not the copper one) that was Withdrawnfree for Export, That was a pretty early can around 1936. LEON.

Re: The Oldest Brewed here, Exported there.....
Withdrawn Free on the can does not always mean that it was exported?
It could have been sold in a stateside military base or federal dispensary of some type and be W/F......am I correct on that assumption?
Just as the word "Export" being on the can often has no relation to the can actually being exported overseas?
Is there any surefire way to tell if a can was sold overseas on purpose? (government records oof some type?)
Lastly, was the Royal actually only sold in the Phillippines and how do we know that? In other words was it a production can or a one off can? Does it say it was for sale in the Philppines on the can? Anyone know the backstory on the Royal can?
thanks
Eric Palmer

"Withdrawn Free on the can does not always mean that it was exported?"
As far as I know it does & if sold stateside for example on a military base it would then have the disregard withdrawnfree on the lid. And if not I've seen the Withdrawnfree statement removed by blacking it out rather crudely with a black marker or even ground off to bare metal with some kind of grinding tool LEON.
P.S. As far as I know the Royal does say exported to Phillipines on back of can. I've posted back of that can on here before, like 10-15 years ago.

Yeah, I had that same can with Withdrawnfree ground off in a Conetop. I know Chris T. had it in a flat top. Think when he bought my cone he had them both. LEON.

Re: The Oldest Brewed here, Exported there.....
The WF Pabst I mentioned above gives the contents in centiliters, and the IRTP can does not. I'd say that shows intent to export.

The Philippines was a US possession from the end of the Spanish-American War until gaining full independence on July 4, 1946.
So, no different than any beer going to Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico.
USA beer going to Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Caribbean islands, etc. would be an export.
