Re: 2018 Big Buck Contest
I'm right there with ya'. I can even sit on my back deck and shoot 'em any time it's legal...gun, bow, black powder, even dropping a large rock would suffice given that they get so close, but, naaaaah! I just can't do it. Now whistle pigs, I'll shoot those consarned varmints any chance I get dggnabbit!WISCONSINCANMAN wrote: ↑Sat Nov 17, 2018 1:11 pm The Wisconsin gun season opened today, but bow season has been open a while, here's one that was taken with a bow. Not my deer, just thought I would share the picture. Congrats on your buck ! I used to deer hunt, gave it up, don't have the heart to kill them anymore. Going ice fishing later today.

Re: 2018 Big Buck Contest
WISCONSINCANMAN- You got one of them right that I mention about. Here the photo of 2 of them. Both taken in Trempealeau county, on the same property and both will make it in the B&C. And you're right. Trempealeau and Buffalo County are top buck for B&C anywhere. But don't forget about Pepin and Eau Claire County. Where I grow up. I started hunting in Buffalo County and my first buck was a big one. I now hunt in Bayfield county, where I have to deal with predators such as wolves, coyotes, bobcat and bears. There is some big buck roam around but very rarity get into B&C. I'm still hunting , pass up a small deer this morning.

Re: 2018 Big Buck Contest
Both nice bucks for sure. Your right Pepin and Eau Claire counties put out some big ones too. I live in Lincoln County, they say the states largest wolf pack lives in my township, (Harrison), and surrounding area. I watched a wolf drag a road kill deer into the woods not far from my driveway. Hunters take many deer in my area too, a lot of them just don't live long enough to get trophy size, but every year a few dandy get taken. Good luck hunting. Bayfield County is beautiful, I love that area.

Re: 2018 Big Buck Contest
Sorry. Reason I am asking is because Mule deer antlers are bifurcated; they “fork” as they grow, rather than branching from a single main beam like Whitetail deer.willssoda wrote: ↑Sat Dec 01, 2018 11:12 pmCurious. Re: 2018 Big Buck Contest
Those are all whitetail deer, with all the deer running around Wisconsin, you get a few unique looking whitetails. The smart ones make it thru all the gun, archery, muzzleloader seasons, and hopefully the coyotes, and wolves don't get them.

Re: 2018 Big Buck Contest
WISCONSINCANMAN is right. Those are all whitetail. Sometime, some of the whitetail deer horn grow a Freak of Nature. Such as one of the photo I just posted. As you notice one of them look like a unicorn !! These buck take 4-5 years depend on the location, grow Big Antler, sometime grow abnormal point. but they are whitetail. Very Rarely have a pure Mule deer in state of Wisconsin and that include the state of Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa,Illinois or east of Mississippi Last time , I heard a pure Mule deer in Wisconsin about 2 years ago. Taken in west-central Wisconsin and the horn wasn't very big. Mule deer do have fork on the horn, but it a little upper of the horn. They have hardly any or small brow tine and their face such as hair as mule deer have more black hair between eyes and horn. also they have shorter nose so look like a little snout . Now in some state that have mule and whitetail deer. such as state of North & South Dakatoa,Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, west of Texas, and sometime these animal are in the same territory get into a cross-bred or Hybrid and those are wild animal, not fence. If you ever seen a hybrid deer, the key point is the brow tine.
hoover- Those are nice buck, but I think that buck is nocturnal . But I do have a question to ask you. Do you live within the city limit ??
Well, I have 3 days left of muzzleloader hunt and this weekend hunt was lousy because of the weather as I have to deal with a 30 mph wind !!!!!!! I didn't bother hunting all day.

I have seen this buck(and others lately) in the surrounding area, in the late afternoon- possibly a late rut. There is a small stand of trees in my backyard that leads directly to the Root River parkway and every year we have fawns born in the backyard. Ziphippie
