Columbia Straight Steel Tab Not in Book. Rare or just missed

#1

Post by zoinkss »

I picked up a collection and found this air sealed Columbia. I pulled it out as an after though only because it was so clean. When I looked in the book, there is no Straight Steel version. Is this one in the supplement? I had never seen it and the local guys had not as well.

Could this be a "crimped steel flat" that was rolled as a straight steel can? If it is rolled it would have to be impossible to figure out how it was "supposed" to have been made, right?

Not rolled. It has a national seam that matches the national code which puts it mid 70s.
No marks on lids for canning machines.
I think this is a legit can. Maybe testing was done in the Straight Steel period but by the time it came off the line they switched to crimped.
Or National was trying for the account and made a run of cans to show the brewery.
What canning plant symbols are on the crimped version?
Here is a pic of another national can from same time period side by side seams. symbol and seam match.

Got mine in a small collection of oddball tabs I picked up years ago. I figured it was an oversight. But definitely from the factory and not rolled.

I can find the crimped steel and aluminum Columbia Beer cans from Tacoma all day.

I have never seen a straight steel Columbia.

I'm interested if you want to trade or sell.

I vote for both. Rare and missed. I remember seeing OMT's and saying, "I've never seen this before".
