1. Would it have to be a design that is not commonly available with another lid?

3. Would it have to be all original, the best known example of that can, and bottom opened?

Eric; Beautiful Can, meets the criteria so who knows? This post may be blending the interest of a Collector [who won't sell] with those that are more of the Investor type [who might say " Time to Sell" ]. There is no right or wrong, just the way it is!

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
For the non US tabs - maybe a Rhodesian can will someday be worth $10,000+?
BUT - the other side of this value question - is there a point when $10,000 devalues enough agree that a tab/zip is "fairly" exchanged for $10,000? The deficit continues to bulge larger even without as much oil being imported...

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
The aging of the hobby may not change the top end/ At that end we need a small number of serious collectors. I doubt a foreign tab even OCOC will be likely to go that high because foreign cans in general see for much less based of their rarity in comparison with US cans. The top end would be more affected by several top end collectors leaving the hobby or several new collectors with large amount of resources competing for cans.

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
I once watched old Fred Johnson (RIP - IBC Chapter, Indpls, IN) buy a Malt Duck tab from a guy at the Denver CANvention for $4500! Just cause it said something about "GRAPE" flavor on the front, differently from the "APPLE" flavor wording that appears on all Malt Ducks... The collector, who was popular, but I don't recall his name as I was just getting back into the hobby then, very begrudgingly sold it to him ... he kept saying no he wouldn't sell the can, but Fred kept raising his offer and when he hit $4500 the guys wife jumped in and said "yes, HE will sell you the can for $4500" ... heavy eye-rolling ensued...
Irrational Exuberance, perhaps...
Anyone know about that Malt Duck can? When Freds collection was liquidated (due to a divorce) he had back-doored a few cans before the trustee assigned someone to liquidate the cans for the EX ... That can and a couple others got peeled out before the liquidation... one can he had promised me was a National COLT 7 oz ZIP TOP!!! But ole Fred was struggling then and someone else latched on to it... never seen the Colt 7 oz zip again... have the straight steal flat, and the common aluminum flat, but have yet to see the ZIP version...

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
Somebody once told me they looked into what it would take to have their own label produced by Maier Brewing in Los Angeles. Apparently 2,000 cases (48,000 cans) was the minimum order. With that in mind, here's a hypothetical situation.
In 1963 a high end Jewish grocery store in Beverly Hills orders up the minimum amount of Sandy Koufax MVP Lager in zip top cans. It has a large picture of him on the mound in full windup on the front of the can. They take delivery and put it on the shelves. A few days later all the remaining cans are pulled and destroyed. Maybe they had trademark issues with the Dodgers or perhaps the beer wasn't kosher - it does not matter. Anyhow only a handful of cans are actually sold. Low and behold a bottom opened mint one appears after all these years along with some sort of provenance that documents the scenario I've outlined.
You have a previously unknown production can with great graphics. It's going to be appeal to beer can collectors in general and in particular zip top and California specialists. You also have deep pocketed baseball collectors and maybe even Jewish themed collectors highly interested. The can hits the open market in a well publicized auction. $10,000 is certainly not an inconceivable price.
That's probably what it's going to take in the near future for a tab to hit that price level.

The oddball malt duck has a few difference but flavoured spelled with the u is very noticeable. Perhaps meant for a Canadian market but no French. The apple malt duck has flavoured with the u.

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
Are we talking about the can in the middle? The Apple clearly is red not purple (left) and has Apple written at the top. The can on the right is the common tab. The middle can has three lines of writing instead of 4. The writing starts lower and the words red grape are in all caps. Serve ice cold is written at the top instead of the bottom. The differences are fairly easy to spot. I don't think any of them are unique but I could be wrong. (Not my cans)

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
RIP, Fred. I asked him if there was anything that would tempt him back into collecting. He said a minty 12oz Calgary Malt Lager. He was shocked when I picked up the white Whales White Ale with the rope. He said that was one can he was never able to acquire.

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
When I first saw this question, the first cans that came to my mind were several very tough 16's, including the Altes. But I believe the market for 16's will prevent them from ever reaching that level, at least any time soon. I also thought about the 14 oz. Draft, but same thing. The super tough 14's and 16's have a much smaller market, so much less demand, so quite a bit lower prices--though the toughest ones fit the list above to a T.storzman wrote: ↑Tue Oct 16, 2018 11:19 pmhmmmm....like thiskruegerbock wrote: ↑Tue Oct 16, 2018 9:30 am So what would make a US tab can go for $10K?

If there is a version of the very first Iron City (78-28) that has some sort of provenance that it was in the first batch that came off the line, so it literally was the first pull tab, and it was in mint shape, I think that would be your first $10,000 tab …

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
Fred Johnson had a passion for the hobby and specialized in cans from National Bohemian [ Baltimore, Detroit, Miami, and Phoenix] didn't matter which brewery. Fred knew that at the 1980 Garrard Auction a " True Mate " purple Malt Duck can was sold. He began to search for the pink Malt Ducks " True Mate " although he didn't know exactly what or why the can was referenced as such. Eventually Fred talked to John Vetter [ The King of Crowns ] who not only knew the can but also had his own example of it. This made two and Fred had to have it! Fred eventually obtained the can and paired it up with his Apple Malt Duck. The Apple Malt Duck and the even rarer Grape Malt Duck are Malt Liquor cans- the commonly seen can is a " BEER". A third can has been discovered and is in a very large collection in Indiana. As far as I know these are the only three Grape MDML cans known. If I were offered 10k for my can, my response would be maybe someday just " Not Yet ". There is virtually no chance of obtaining another

We have both the malt duck apple and the tough grape cans for sale, will post pics later. One tab that I thought could bring 10k is the Soul 8 ounce can that was rumored to be at least produced (maybe never filled) the soul cans always had this mystique about them, always a strong selling can too.

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
Glenn Heinz has a actual newspaper ad showing a pallet of soul 8 ounce cans being ready to be shipped out. This is actual photos of the cans, not artist renditions.

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
If anyone has the middle yellow can for sale or knows where one can be found we're looking for oneWrestling Nut wrote: ↑Mon Oct 15, 2018 9:21 pm If you find any of these 3 for under 4k in great condition, I highly recommend that you buy it.
Again, I didn't say there were $10k tabs floating around today. I was attempting to start a decent conversation about what one tab might jump in value in the future and be the first to reach that mark.
