Question: First $10,000 tab?
I was discussing this question with some fellow tab collectors and thought I'd post it for discussion. The price of clean tabs is increasing almost daily. With that in mind I feel that it is only a matter of time before we see the first $10k tab sold. It might be a bit off from today but let's put on our 'Carnac the Magnificent' hats and take a shot at it.
So, what tab do you believe will be the first to sell for $10,000 or more?

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
There are several tough labels, but but not sure they are scarce enough to go that high. I'll guess a Narragansett or Anheiser Busch test can.

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
The dealers have, and always will push the price envelope as far as possible.
A can (or anything else) is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it!
It is the buyers that will make it happen, ($10k tab).
So the real question is: WHO is the collector that will make that happen?
Who is the tab collector that is the most IMPATIENT, and "just has to have that can", regardless of cost?
If new cans show up in dealer totes, and collectors are patient, and do not "jump on them", and the cans sit for a while-
then the price will go down. If the cans sell like hot cakes, then the dealers think they can sell them for even more. (and everyone else jumps on the bandwagon).
It all comes down to patience!
So, if you don't want tab prices to continue to rise at stupid rates, DON'T pay stupid prices for them.
Example: how many people will buy a $1000 apple phone, just to have one?
Or are you content with a different brand for $200, which is more dependable, and does not continually have issues?
If no one buys the 1k apple, THE PRICE WILL DROP!!!
Enough said,
Neil

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
I just have to ask...are there any tabs that are valued at $5,000 yet? $3,000? It looks like the Playmate ML is the only can approaching 2K.

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
Playmate Beer is actually the tougher of the two. I'll bet a Promise Kept Frankenmuth could approach $2K, and I've heard a Renaee tab went for (or at least was priced at) $3K. I don't know a thing about test cans, however, some of which must be unique.

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
Not to offend anyone but if you don't think that there are tabs which have sold for 5k or more then you are not in the know. Oddly enough, some are test cans. I know that it is inconceivable to many here as test cans are shunned in general on this site. However, it is true. Conesplus makes a valid point and it is sound advice but it's also not really the point of this thread.
I believe OMT is on the right track with his post. It has to be rare but not completely unobtainable. Highly desirable, mint condition, rare but not unique, and in an area which has bigtime collectors. Anheiser Busch and Narragansett meet those requirements.

Since I'm not in the know, what would these be? I know the Malt Duck Apple, Purple Cow Zip & Red Bird Test can (possibly brown Super S) have sold around the $3,000 mark, But what pull tabs have sold for well north of $3,000? Also, Let say the unique one know Blue Bird Test cans pops up, Would such a can get $10,000? LEON.

@Leon , that's a possibility. Malt Duck Apple, brown Super S, Playmate beer, Grand Prize tab, Renea Premium, ... and few unique zips/tabs, and numerous test cans.

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
There isn't a Wisconsin Tab or Zip Top that would demand that kind of Money so I won't worry about it!...What I would like too know is what NON Can that could even begin to get near that Price range??
If it were a test Can why pay 10k for a Can that more than likely never held Beer?....On the other hand more power to the Person Who is willing to Pay!!...It's only worth what one is willing to Pay!!

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
If you find any of these 3 for under 4k in great condition, I highly recommend that you buy it.
Again, I didn't say there were $10k tabs floating around today. I was attempting to start a decent conversation about what one tab might jump in value in the future and be the first to reach that mark.

I can't think of any pull tab that would or could ever get $10,000 in the future. 1 known filled or not, 1 known test can or not.
Thinking about it maybe I can. How about Ermal C. Fraze very first prototype test zip top from like 1959 or pre 62 sign & dated by Ermal himself & purchased from him directly or the Family? Hmmm

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
When I saw Gene's collection and eyeballed a 16oz Grape Malt Duck a few years ago, assuming it was a one off test tab, I wondered then how much it would cost to get it. There have to be a bunch of test cans that someone "just has to have", no?

After looking through the Tab Top Book I think a 1+ F&S 1st. Gen. Zip Top Bottom Opened with a P.A Tax Stamp on the Bottom Lid could be a good 4-5k Can!....1+ Bottom Opened White State Fair 3-4k?
P.S....I still have My 1+ 16oz SS Robin Hood Ale....It is unlisted could be a short run or a test?....That is one I will keep I like it!

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
So what would make a US tab can go for $10K?
1. Would it have to be a design that is not commonly available with another lid?
2. Would it have to be a design that is not very similar to one or more commonly available can?
3. Would it have to be all original, the best known example of that can, and bottom opened?
4. Would it have to be known as a can that was actually filled and sold to the public?
5. Would it have to cross-over to one or more other competitive area of collecting (e.g. CA can, PA can, WI can, Chicago can, sports can?, zip top?)
If I had to guess, a can that meets most or all of the above criteria would have the best shot.
Or:
1. Maybe it's the best known first Iron City zip, bottom opened, with a VA tax stamp?
Or (Non-US)
1. Would it have to be the first can available from an OCOC country that is very difficult to get a can from?

Re: Question: First $10,000 tab?
I personally believe that prices will actually drop in the next ten years solely due to the aging of the hobby and you will only see a larger supply and even less buyers in the future. I think some of the shakeout is already happening in the last couple of years with some big time collections being sold and many previously unavailable cans becoming available.
Therefore the likelihood of a $10,000 dollar can becomes even less likely in my book.
With that said.....If a can was to go to $10,000, it would have to be something like the Canadian Heidelberg tab exported to South Africa which has that one of a kind rarity along with a whole nation looking to find one. Or possibly something with some salacious histrory attached to it like Donald Trump and Stormy Daniels drank from this Olde English 800 can while in their hotel room or Monica and Bill shotgunned this Colt 45 in the White House?
