Dawson’s (in red letters!) Quart dumper NIB

#1

Post by Pbama »

Just happened across the below Dawson’s (in red letters!) Master Ale (in black letters) dumper quart. This quart is not in the book and I was told it’s a “super tough” can. Anybody have this can? Any knowledge of this can’s history would be appreciated? If interested, I will entertain offers, just send me a PM. Thanks!

That’s awesome!! Looks like it could improve some with an acid bath. What’s the backstory?

Guy in NH had a collection listed on CL for free. So I called him and he said it was free so I left work early to pick it up. There were 4 huge Dell computer boxes full of cans meticulously individually wrapped in 1988 newspaper. Guy said his brother collected in HS and graduated in ‘76. Guy gave me a lesson on the evolution of the beer can starting with the “cone head” cans! Said he bought the collection off his brother for $600. I ended up pulling the following pictured cans out of collection; the Silver Cream & Menominee (NIB-cream colored label) are both cones with tops removed (ughh!). The Genny 12 Horse hopefully will clean up well! Today, I was getting the donation box ready and when I picked up the 2 Dawson’s quarts and held them side by side I had to do a double take when I saw the lettering between the 2 cans. Looked in the book, saw that it wasn't in there so I got in touch with Woody and Can Dr., both said it is a “very tough” New England can and that I should shelf it. Funniest thing was that the guy also offered me a Zamboni for FREE! LOL!

That's awesome! You don't see that Kappy's every day, either. Love the Genny.

I've seen about 6 of those red letter quarts without visiting very many collections at all. Never saw one on eBay, ever. Very nice. I'm interested if you don't want to keep it!

We photographed the red letter Dawson at the Cleveland Canvention for the digital book. The gentleman that had it said that there were only a few known and that the one photographed was second best. I had never seen one before that.

Great find. A number of nice additional cans as well.

Thanx.

Pbama...........what a great collection you picked up......congrats!

I have seen just a few of the red letter Dawson's, and all have been in relatively similar condition. So I always wondered if they were found at the same time in the early days of the hobby and then locked up in collections. Now some have slowly been reappearing only to get locked up again.

Here is mine, it came from the Ed Ackerman collection when it was parted out.

Go to Breweriana.com, Search Dawson's odd size cones sold and you will see probably the best example of the Red lettered Dawson's quart. Dan picked it up from Larson with an asking price of $3500, which I think is a steal.

Kappys zip is a great can, as well as the Colt 45 Malt Lager.

I'm sure someone else spotted this but no one has commented … the PBR instructional has the red opener on the side, meaning it's from Peoria Heights and not Milwaukee. Not a super rare can, but definitely tougher than the Milwaukee cans and it looks pretty high grade. You have a LOT of nice cans in this group!

Yeah, I spotted that, but didn't mention it because it was the Blue Ribbon with red opener instead of the much tougher Export (with no blue ribbon) red opener. LEON.

BTW, that Yellow Dawson's Premium Quality Ale on the right next to it in the photo, is another Quart that is ridiculous to try and find clean. You see them all the time as off grade and spotty, but NEVER clean like that one! Those are some wing dingers in that photo!!!!!! Wood

Pbama:

Nice score of cans there. Some real gems. That red letter Dawson's is super tough as others mentioned. I first saw one in Dave Lang's collection and thought it was the coolest Dawson's quart and hoped, one day, I would get one. As Seamonkey noted, I was able to acquire one at the Cleveland Canvention.
