if that was the can I helped clean...I know where it was dug - does it have a chunk of rim missing near the seam...(?) - the place Im thinking - where one similar to this was dug -is in Rhode Island - somewhere near Newport - there were a bunch of the Ales - a couple Pales and one Beer.....as well as some Hanley J Spouts - some small state forest ......a cellar hole....still more there apparently....a (mostly) non-can-digger friend of mine found them...

Pete everywhere in RI is near Newport! Seriously though if it was on the Island i bet it was in Portsmouth which probably has the only underdeveloped land left down there.

Re: I got the can I wanted from the auction
its a tiny little state forest - and you have to be sort of sneaky..because its right on a hiking trail - Ive never been there..but.....the cellar hole is still full of 1930s Naragansett cans.....apparently....

Re: I got the can I wanted from the auction
Nice can, Jerry. So, question to the masses...which is tougher...the first or second Gansett Beer OIs or the first or second Pale OIs? USBCOI book notes approx numbers:
Pale 552 - 12 examples
Pale 553 - 1 known
Beer 554 - 3 known
Beer 555 - 4 known
We also got the can we wanted from Rand's auction...lucky to get the first Pale OI (thanks Rand and Woody). Not sure how many are out there but this was first chance we've had at that label. I've never seen can 553 except in the book.
Attached are our Beers. With the book can, Jerry's and ours, that makes at least three of the first Beer. Any others out there?
Chris and I dumped 10 of the second Beer OIs in NH back in the 80's, this being the best one. So, there are at least 9 others somewhere in New England collections...plus at least a couple on-grade examples...

Re: I got the can I wanted from the auction
Nice pickup, Jerry. If Keith dumped ten of the other variation, it's a safe bet that you got the tougher one! I made the questionable decision to save 3% by paying by check, so my cans just shipped today.
I've only only seen the older version of the Pale, and I've only seen three. I've spun many a Pale in totes over the years to check for instructions.

Sorry to bid you up.....
Awesome can! A fellow RB’r got a Narragansett Beer at the Zion Crossroads, VA show for UNDER $100 before I could get it. Kept offering him more and more to resell it to me but no dice!

Hey Scott, some people just won't resell something they just got for a profit. Thank God you're not one of them. Still love my thermometer!Sea Monkey wrote: ↑Sat Aug 04, 2018 5:36 pm Sorry to bid you up.....

Re: I got the can I wanted from the auction
I agree Steve but as you know I didn’t sell you the thermometer for the profit. It was for where I thought it most belonged. I’m glad you like it!

Re: I got the can I wanted from the auction
I know you didn't sell it for a profit - I offered you more money than you actually accepted. One of the MANY reason I love this hobby so much. You just don't see that in other hobbies. I've collected baseball cards, stamps, coins, comic books and paper money in the past and it seems, to me, that everyone is out for themselves in those hobbies. It seems to me that there are more people in beer cans that are willing to help out a fellow collector more.Sea Monkey wrote: ↑Sun Aug 05, 2018 5:45 am I agree Steve but as you know I didn’t sell you the thermometer for the profit.
