The OI Whisperer Auction

#1

Post by Jim Romine »

I have a question, after seeing the posting for Rand's Iron City OI can.
The description says there are only 8 known dumpers. Is that so?
MARC I expect you to weigh in on this!

I would guess there are more than that.

I personally dumped 3 in the early 1980's in western PA.

Gary McClimans also dumped one (inside a pickle jar) at a different location in western PA. It is in fantastic shape.

Jim,

I suspect that number was low when Kevin published. Dwight has dug several since then also.

The numbers of known cans definitely have to be taken with a grain of salt. I personally own 18 R-10 cans, and none of them are the cans shown in either the original book or the supplement. But Kevin's numbers are spot on if you take them in groups, and focus on the group and not on individual cans. For example, the group of R-4's are definitely easier than the group of R-5's, which are in turn easier than the R-6's, etc.

OI Whisperer here! At the Tahoe canvention.....nice venue.....pretty cool event. Brought the remainder of my collection that didn't make the cut for the auction, and moved quite a bit of it. Came in with 2 totes more or less....walking out with 1 tote more or less. Took a bunch of pictures but will have to wait until tomorrow when I get home to upload.

As to the estimated number of cans....yea....those numbers come straight from the Lilek books. We tried to make it clear with phrases like "reference author estimates X known" or "author estimate Y quality examples" etc etc. Looks like the Iron City (and likely some others) may have been a bit more vague with phrases like only "8 estimated"......sorry.....that's 8 estimate by Kevin. Same applies to most estimates. There are a few like the Class, Liebmanns, Triangle, Hopfheiser, etc where the numbers are pretty well established.....and hopefully those are noted clearly. Others like the WF Buffalo, we note the Lilek estimate and then try to report a recent find like the one by Roy to give a better scope....but we don't always have all the info. Just happen to for the WF Buffalo.....and some others. Hope that helps.

I was thinking that Dwight dug them twice, but I may have mis-remembered. I know mine came from Dwight and that he had a few left at the time. Either way, the can was virtually impossible until the 2000's and demand still far exceeds supply.

This example came up on eBay a few years ago. Can’t tell if it’s a really nice dumper or off grade indoor.....sharp can!

I remember when a mint 1 popped up on ebay about 10-15 years ago. Opening bid was $5,000 & I thought that was steep. no bids all day then suddenly disappeared? LEON.

the ebay can at 7100 was better in hand than pictured...and cleaned up even better...was told it was from a small closet collection of a dozen cans the rest being cones...it did have 3 bb dimples on one side luckily it survived the target practice...Mike
