Almost missed a pair of Cincy signs - Pre-Garage Sale Pickup

#1

Post by OhioCanGuy »

Was very close to missing a decent deal on these two Cincinnati signs.

Story goes like this: Went to look at a tab collection yesterday morning. Maybe 400 cans, many, many common 70's cans. A few decent cans mixed in, one flat top, no cones. Virtually all the tabs were top opened. Very nice guy to talk to, but we just couldn't get there on a price. His childhood collection. So, I passed on the cans.

As I'm walking toward the door, something catches my eye. BTW, we are in his parents house (recently deceased). Everything is in shambles and was clearly neglected for decades. Stuff is everywhere. They are getting everything moved out and thrown away. Plan is to sell the house as is. It is in a very nice area of town where total tear downs and rebuilds are common. Very likely what will happen here. Anyway, back to breweriana... out of the corner of my eye, across the room, I see what looks to be a Red Top sign sitting on a table (with of course, stuff on top of it). I walk over and pick it up and ask "is this for sale?" His wife says yes and says they have another sign as well. She goes into another room and returns with a Schoenling sign. Both signs were rather dusty/dirty but no cracks and both lit up by simply plugging in.

I then asked price, they weren't sure. Had to call another relative who was organizing a garage sale. The signs were going to be part of the sale. Fortunately they were able to get the other person on the phone. Price was very reasonable for the pair, of course, I bought them.

Red Top sign is pretty common I think, but this is a nice example and again, price was right. Schoenling sign is a cash register sign and I'm thinking a little less common, but I'm not a sign expert. It was truly covered in a brown grime from many years of just sitting, collecting dust. I got a lot of it off, but it will improve from here for sure. I left some in the bottom of the "S" as an example. The entire sign looked like that when I got it.

Glad to have them and always nice to come away with something from one of these visits.

Flats, cones & early tabs. Ohio cans, ultra clean cans & shine. East coast cans. Rare rust. And, whatever else catches my eye.

The Red Top may be more common, but I've never seen one before, while I have seen a few of the Schoenlings over the years.

Nice pick up!
