Tough Hi Pro cones with USBC <$1000+ value

#1

Post by ConeAddict »

Was just looking further into the Olde English 600 from Peoples in the Duluth and saw that the USBC was only $450 but it seems to be a can on grade that may go for $3000 - $4000. What are some other high profiles that are on this level but undervalued in the USBC? Red Wing (USBC $800) comes to mind but I can't think of any others off the top of my head that would sell for so much more than book value, it is more common with the older low pros to go for 4-5 times book value but I haven't noticed it so much with the high profile cones.

Definitely no expert on this subject, but the first can that came to my mind is Ziegler's. Not sure what an ongrade can would sell for, but you sure don't seem to see many of them, in any condition.

I have never seen one, but I would think a Grade 1 POS cone would fetch over $1000.

I thought of Zieglers as there were a couple of rolled examples listed at around 2K on dealer sites but then I saw a couple sold on Ebay in the last year and I don't think either approached $1000, I think they were solid cans but neither were grade 1. The Ohio cans listed are probably good candidates, never noticed there was a tough Gam. A pretty rough Falls Velvet sold for I think almost $600 on Ebay so have to think a clean one would be in high demand. What about the Rainier with the mountain on it($500)? That seems like a can that would be highly desirable that I haven't seen available.

I thought of a couple of others that should bring in $1000+ in on-grade condition. White Horse, English Lad Brand Ale, and Diamond State which I have only seen in the books. Cool topic!

Gold Seal by Silver Springs in Port Orchard WA - USBC 166-5 ($600). Just look at the example in the book!
You never see the quart USBC 210-11 ($700) either.

Regarding the Burger Ale cone that was mentioned earlier in the thread - I sold the only one known about 15 years ago from my old collection (I think that it had come from Lewandowskis earlier)_. There was considerable debate as to whether the can was a real cone or not. Never could get consensus. Since a lot of folks believed that the can was not a real cone, that drove the price way down. I think it sold for something like $225 under the circumstances.

Separate - I would add Arrowhead to the list. Matt

Some great examples here, amazing how may times I can look through the USBC and not notice some of these. A couple of obvious ones I just noticed, Indianhead Ale and Old Tap Ale are graphic cans that would exceed their book value by quite a bit.

BrooklynBeer wrote: Mon May 07, 2018 9:02 pm I know of the Bartels we found two in a bathroom wall remodel with caps in Lindenhurst NY around 1989. Both were mint and when the collection was downsized in 1995 we sold ours at the time for the giant sum of 1700. The other went into another local collection and is now lost to time. I have never seen or heard of one ever being dumped and never seen one for sale or trade anywhere. I would put that high pro in the top 3 of rarities not only in NYC cans but in high pro cones as well. I have pics some place.

I'm going to guess this is one of the other 3 NY Hi Pro's.

I was thumbing through my USBC just now admiring all the cans mentioned in this thread ... and found one no one has mentioned, actually a few. The Dawson's Beer cones 159-5 though 8. Don't see any of those much in any condition, not even here in New England.

I have the burger cone 155-21 in my collection and it was pricey. It has some interesting history though. Not likely to recoup my investment if I sell it.

What is the history? Is it a flat with a cone on top or just a fake? Could not find the old thread on it here

A few theories, Todd Bakemeier, a prominent Cincinnati collector (passed away) called me up when I was bidding on it and said it was the can in the book and was convinced it was a flat with a cone added. Not sure if that is true. I won it on eBay in 2006 and and have others tell me it is the real deal. Have never seen another one since.

I say legit.

Your can is in better condition than the one in the book appears to be in, so likely not the same can. If it is a flat with a cone (which it's not) it's from a flat that is not in the book as the can is different than the flat version. Height issue has been mentioned as well. Burger made both beer and ale versions of the white can and either red or green oval in the flat. So, not a stretch to assume they would have done so in the cone as well. Burger Ale cans are consistently tougher than the beer cans.

Great can!
