Two odd cans Rhinegold not in book and Old Milwaukee from Longview

#1

Post by zoinkss »

I found these two cans in a craigslist ad. The Old Milwaukee is listed as a test can in the book but it has a stamp on the bottom "MD-3". It looks like it was dumped so maybe its actually a test market can and did make it to a limited market.
The Rheingold ALE is NOT IRTP and has the mandatory in Black NOT red on the front. There were a lot of drinking cups and a few air sealed cans in this bunch so someone got cans from a can co or brewery.
Is the Rheingold a missed book can? Anyone else have one?

Great pick up on the Old Milwaukee! That is a tough version.

By the way, ALL Old Milwaukee's from this time period list Longview first, no matter what city they were actually brewed in. The only way to tell what city a Schlitz can is from is if there is a dot over the city, or only one city is listed. If neither, it is not possible to tell what city they came from.

@zoinkss Andrew The Rheingold is list 2 sided non-IRTP black mandatory 123-26......now if you have one that is red that would not be in the book...the other one like that can that is NOT in the book is the one with the small h after the big R.

When I look in the book, the Rheingold listed page 123 #26 has no IRTP but the mandatory looks to be in red. Mine has no IRTP and the mandatory is in black. I do not have a can to compare. Is the mandatory for #26 red in the book or black? I guess better pics are needed. When I use a loop, it looks like it is a much lighter color than #25 mandatory.

The Old Milwaukee, I thought was odd was because it seemed to have had beer in it at one time. Was it a known Test Market can or was it only a test can? Some guys only collect cans that held beer.

@zoinkss Andrew....take a look at the USBC Supplement. You'll see that the mandatory is black. As a matter of fact, the USBC is updated with a shot of all sides.

I have five different Rheingold's pictured here. All have a black mandatory. The short "h" is the oldest, then two IRTPs that have the same fronts but different panels along the seam. One of these two IRTPs is 123-25. The last two are non-IRTP two-faced cans, the main difference being in the "i" and "l" in Rheingold...one has vertical lines going left on the top and bottom of the "i" and "l" and the other has curved bottoms of the "i" and "l" going to the right. 123-26 is the second to last can chronologically. Are there any more variations??

Thanks for the close up shots of the seams and variances. I wish there was a way to get the supplement downloaded. Hard to get good signal at the shows sometimes.
