R10 BUD OI

#1

Post by CMD »

My picker friend found this for me a while ago....I went to breweriana.com to get the date code and when I looked at this can , I noticed it had the patent info printed on the seam, it also didn't have Keglined anywhere on the can. Found it in the Lilek supplement 140A , states its an R10, I guess now its an R9 because there 2 on grade examples...click to supersize

Is it me or is there a rub mark on the left side by the rim above "genuine" that looks like metallic paint underneath?

I think this is just a very early variation of the label. Continental did the same thing on their First FBLP Schlitz. There is no other canning information other than what is on the seam. Longopener highlighted this in his BCCA article.

Conhead, If this was such a very early variation of this label as you say then wouldn't it be the older earlier Patents Pending can instead of 2 Patents Others Pending :smt017 LEON.

Good question. Maybe it is just the very first variation of the 2 patents others Pending era.

I have an indoor example as well although not as nice. Seam has some surface rust, partially obscuring the patent info, but it’s definately there.

There was some requirement in 1937 or 38 , that the Can company info had to be separate from the Brewery info...hence sometimes you find a line separating where the OI panel and Keglined info was....this could have been the first attempt to comply

I wasn't suggesting to rub it out, just thought it was interesting. I'm curious though what year the metallic cans were made and were they in production right before this one? Just thinking maybe it's a way to date it is all.

The shiny version is a post-war can, this is a prewar can. Very odd indeed.

Could it be possible that the silver undercoating paint got scraped off the can sheet before the gold top coat was applied?

Although, apparently not an R10, it is still a hard version to get. 140 & 141 are R9, so I would say this is just as difficult. I do not have that version.

That one seems to be too elusive to give credence to it. I have never seen one. Granted, I have not seen any of the great St. Louis collections, so it may be real, but I have my doubts.
