What's the story about Royal 58 tips?

#1

Post by clark »

I've noticed a lot of Royal 58 zip tops for sale. Most all are really clean indoor cans with intact zips. Was there a big find of these at some time? Ebay prices have varied from $5-25 for apparently identical cans - is there a minor variation I'm not seeing?

There was a very large find in the late 70's (I believe at the brewery itself) of pallets of unfilled cans. The find of these cans rivals the giant find of Becker's 11oz flat tops that we're also found by the pallet inside the closed brewery. Tab straight steel cans were shipped from the factory with the tops and the bottoms were added after the can was filled, so these had no bottom lids.

It is still easy to find these cans without bottoms, but over the years, hundreds (thousands?) of them have been lidded so there are a lot of air filled examples out there. These cans were so plentiful at one time that their zip tops have been used to lid tons of rarer cans. IMO, the can is worth $10 or so.

The can I have seen with the hole punched on the side was not the Royal 58, it was the Wunderbar can from Minneapolis.

I remember circa 1976/77 (?) some early 1960s can was offered in a display ad in the old World Wide Beer Can Collector's newsletter for $5 apiece plus postage IIRC. I was thinking it was Royal 58, or maybe a can with an Indian name/motif. I bought one and it seems like it had a zip top and had a bottom. The ad said there had been a find of unused cans. If I can locate my old collection pics it's probably in a pic.

Thanks, I figured it was something like that. This might hold the title of "cheapest mint intact zip" can on the market?
