We will be busy for a while
Ed and I bought the Babitski collection in Tucson. 6500 cans in the collection and 20,000 traders........probably 10,000 aluminum cans. We filled a 26 foot Uhaul truck and the back of Eds pickup....the deal was , we had to take everything. I have one bay in my garage with the collection and better duplicates. What you see here in the picture is 2 12 foot trailers and the space in between filled with the rest. Ed B and his wife were avid dumpers and started collecting in the early 70s. Ed B was an Air Force officer....he would buy cases of beer and have his airmen drink it for free....all they had to do was bottom open and rinse and place back in the box or case. he spent a lot of money on beer!!! We spent the past weekend trying to sort out the aluminum and junk from the better stuff but barely made a dent. I found a 10 can, can crusher online....needless to say we are going to be busy for a while. Someone had to rescue this collection, I suspect if it wasn't for us, it may have been cherry picked and then everything else would have went into a dumpster.
Cheers
Dan

Thanks for saving. Some Rusty Buncher will want many of the better items. Bring them to Canvention.....Maybe there will be a smaller version of the Senator Seebs parking lot action a few years back. Great time we all had!

I’m sure there are some gems in there. Now they just have to be dumped a second time. LOL!!
Please post pics as you sort through it all. Would love to see the progress as it unfolds.

Re: We will be busy for a while
I can't imagine the scope of what you're into. Good luck with it.
I agree with Jon. You guys generally deal with and are great with the older, rarer stuff. Maybe keep a magnet handy and set aside the steel cans. You can always donate to the RB dump at Canv. There may be some tough aluminum out there also. Maybe consider a one time post in the ad section to see if you can move some here. Some of us still collect that crap. I just hate to see a lot of it going to recycling without somebody have a shot at some of it. Just an opinion...not a request or recommendation.

Re: We will be busy for a while
Wow, that will be quite the challenge, good luck with it all! Can't wait to have a stab at a few of the goodies in there ...
And let me also third the suggestions of YooperAho and MI-Cans. With a collection of that size there are almost certainly some tough later steel, drawn steel, and aluminum cans sprinkled in there. I know it's a huge amount of work because I've bought smaller collections than that and am still playing with some of the cans years later. But I also hate to see good cans saved for years, then end up in the dumpster when some of us would love to have them! Maybe you could try a couple BIG group photos at some point and let folks on the site tell you what is worth saving or checking for variations ...

Re: We will be busy for a while
Anything with a UPC now gets you a dime a can deposit return in Oregon....a little time at the can return machines might pay for a quick road trip to the Northwest, and a stop at an Indian casino. Just a thought.

Re: We will be busy for a while
He was a big variation collection , lots of variants from national brands like , bud, pabst , schlitz, falstaff etc etc espeically from the western branches. The 16oz collection wasn't displayed and hasn't seen the light of day in 35 years as it was in storage.....same with the foreign cans.
Planning on bringing a lot of this stuff to the Canvention in Omaha

Re: We will be busy for a while
Two words - ruthless purge. Otherwise you (or Dale) will be sitting on that stuff for a lifetime.
I believe in order for it to be worth a dime in Oregon it has to say Oregon deposit or something to that effect versus simply having a UPC symbol. It's OK if it says five cents, it's worth a dime now. My point being that at some point in the past, a deposit had to have been paid on the can in Oregon. The machines will reject the older stuff so then you are stuck trying to explain to a pimple faced stock boy how it works while he counts them by hand. My guess is you will fare about as well as Kramer and Newman did in their mail truck.

the test can is rare/
http://www.rustycans.com/Graphics/O-P/p ... %20can.jpg
anything with a foreign language (Spanish or Japanese esp) on it.
Anything that's not from Schlitz or Strohs.
I'd even take those from Schlitz or Strohs just to look for small variations...

If the bar code is showing, then the cans be smashed flat, right? Un-smashed would take up a lot of space....

As for doubles of any straight steel tabs. I collect all minor CA tab variations and if you think slag, if you could please throw them in a box and bring to Watsonville, likely variations I give you $$$ instead of just trash. Cool problem to have!

Re: We will be busy for a while
Here's some of the doubles/dumpers that we had to pack up. There's 2 sides and then there was just as many in the motor home bay and then even more in a back building. These are just the doubles, not the collection. The deal was we HAD to TAKE everything.....

Re: We will be busy for a while
I'll take every 16 ounce Olympia Gold that you run across. Were there any SS 24 ounce Schlitz or Schlitz Malt Liquor from Strohs in there?
