Question for UC Experts

#1

Post by Chris E. »

I know the Beer, Creme Ale, and Sparkling Ale Quarts came out with the German writing band, English writing band, and the plain band variations. I have the Creme Ale from Crown Cork and Seal with the smooth cone. My question is whether there is a Beer and Sparkling Ale counterpart or did CCS only make the Creme Ale? Inquiring minds want to know!

I would expect them to exist Charlie, but I have never seen them.

Like you, I only have the red Cream Ale from CCS.

Does Menke know?

I got a text from Brian DeBraccio (Brian Quartman) last night. Says he saw this thread but was unable to post on the sight?

Here is his quote regarding the question.

"I remember seeing the great Don Santoras collection photos.. He clearly had four variations of the three quarts, for a total of 12 cans which included the crown can in each color.. I've not seen a blue one in person but have seen the beer and cream ale.. They do exist but you gotta work to get them"

This is an excellent question. For what it's worth, here is my summary (credit to Conehead for much of this). I am missing numbers 4, 6, 7, 11, 13, 18, 19 and 21. I have some serious doubts as to whether some of those variations actually exist. Comments???

Matt,

I have verified a few of those on your list of don't haves.

I also have doubts about the existence of some of those. Particularly #4, #11, #19. I don't believe the HPs were produced without a cap sealed panel.

Jim, which ones can you confirm that I don't have, other than the olive drab? If you can't confirm some at this point, I'm pretty sure that they don't exist because we've been looking for them forever - they surely would have shown up by now. But maybe somebody reading this has one??? Matt

I have dumped thousands of UC cones in New York and Mass. For what it's worth, I suggest the following UC cone variations:

1. Utica Club Sparkling Ale 187/30 German Text At Top; No Cap-Sealed Panel; has U Permit No.
2 . Utica Club Sparkling Ale 187/30 German Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel; no U-Permit No.
3. Utica Club Sparkling Ale 187/31 No Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel.
4 . Utica Club Sparkling Ale 187/32 English Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel; "Made By."
To my knowledge, Sparkling Ale was not canned post WWII. Thus there are no Sparkling Ale cones with a large Cap-Sealed panel. Please correct me if this is not the case.
5. Utica Club Pale Cream Ale 188/01 German Text At Top; No Cap-Sealed Panel; has U Permit No.
6. Utica Club Pale Cream Ale 188/01 German Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel; no U-Permit No.
7. Utica Club Pale Cream Ale 188/02 No Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel.
8. Utica Club Pale Cream Ale 188/03 English Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel; "Made By."
9. Utica Club Pale Cream Ale 188/03 English Text At Top; Large Cap-Sealed Panel; "Made By."
10. Utica Club Pale Cream Ale 188/03 English Text At Top; Large Cap-Sealed Panel; "Brewed and Packaged By."
11. Utica Club Pilsener Beer 188/04 German Text At Top; No Cap-Sealed Panel; has U Permit No.
12. Utica Club Pilsener Beer 188/04 German Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel; no U-Permit No.
13. Utica Club Pilsener Beer 188/05 No Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel.
14 Utica Club Pilsener Lager Beer 188/06 Olive Drab; Contents 12 Fluid Ounces At Top.
15. Utica Club Pilsener Lager Beer 188/07 English Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel; "Made By."
16. Utica Club Pilsener Lager Beer 188/07 English Text At Top; Large Cap-Sealed Panel; "Made By."
17. Utica Club Pilsener Lager Beer 188/07 English Text At Top; Large Cap-Sealed Panel; "Brewed and Packaged By."
All of the above cans are in my collection except for the OD and the HP Sparkling Ale.

Quarts follow the same pattern as the 12 oz. cones except that since quarts were not produced after WWII, none exist with the large Cap-Sealed logos, nor is there a OD quart.
Crown Cork & Seal produced a Pale Cream Ale quart for West End. It is very similar to the matching Continental quart except that the Cap-Sealed panel has been deleted. Interestingly enough, this Crown can retains the Cap-Sealed box found on all other UC cones and quarts. The distinctive smooth crown and 7 teeth in the seam give it away as a Crown can. I am unaware of other UC brands produced by Crown in a quart can. Obviously the brewery and can company were in a hurry to produce the Cream Ale quart. Thus, I suggest the following quart variations.

1. Utica Club Sparkling Ale 220/08 German Text At Top; No Cap-Sealed Panel; has U Permit No.
2 . Utica Club Sparkling Ale 220/08 German Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel; no U-Permit No.
3. Utica Club Sparkling Ale Like 187/31 No Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel.
4 . Utica Club Sparkling Ale BCU 161/05 English Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel; "Made By."
5. Utica Club Pale Cream Ale 220/06 German Text At Top; No Cap-Sealed Panel; has U Permit No.
6. Utica Club Pale Cream Ale 220/06 German Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel; no U-Permit No.
7. Utica Club Pale Cream Ale Like 188/01 No Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel.
8. Utica Club Pale Cream Ale 220/07 English Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel; "Made By."
9. Utica Club Pale Cream Ale 220/07 English Text At Top; No Cap-Sealed Panel; Smooth crown and 7 teeth; "Made By."
10. Utica Club Pilsener Beer 220/09 German Text At Top; No Cap-Sealed Panel; has U Permit No.
11. Utica Club Pilsener Beer 220/09 German Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel; no U-Permit No.
12. Utica Club Pilsener Beer Like 189/05 No Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel.
13. Utica Club Pilsener Lager Beer 220/10 English Text At Top; Small Cap-Sealed Panel; "Made By."
Other quart variations may exist. It’s possible that a variety exists with the German slogan, no Cap-Sealed panel and no U permit number.
And that’s my take on UC cones and quarts. If there are additional cans let's see them and update the composite.

Thanks Charlie for the info. That is consistent with my impression the CCS did not make the Beer and Sparkling Ale quarts. However, I sure would have liked to see what Don Santora was displaying to be sure.
