The Dells- antique mall revisited

#1

Post by Ziphippie »

On injured reserve with a hand injury so I thought I’d go for a drive and check out some cans! The mall featured the cans in an Auction Action newsletter ad that came out today so I figured it’d be wise to get there before word gets out- always worth the short drive to the Dells to check out some killer quarts, cones, flats and oddball tabs. Check out what’s left- even a Nat. Bo quart willssoda!

I picked up a Miller softcross 12oz. bottle that hasn’t been seen by Kams- for $6! Cleaning a toasty $2 Hillmans Superb can with Bock lid and paintover bottom lid now- Ziphippie Bjorn

Wow, some nice cans in that case.

Are those available? Prices reasonable?

Congrats on you pick ups!

Hard to make out the prices on most but some seemed a little high, would be interested in the Star and a couple others but unfortunately I am a couple of months away from being back in Wisconsin. But I do drive right through there on my way back. Thanks for posting that, makes me want to hit the antique stores more, many I have stopped into just have some 70's tabs laying around somewhere.

These cans are what is left of an old timer's collection (Very nice guy, who passed.) Most have been there for at least a decade.
Beautiful and some pretty rare, but the prices are salty. The prices on them are what he paid for them back in the day.
He had some absolutely stunning quarts!

Yikes....Hope he didn't pay $500 for the common Old Topper J.

How much on the FBIR Salute?

I do not stop into antique stores very often but if they carried cans like that, I probably would.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

On-grade beer can offerings at antique malls is not common. Discoveries as this, in 35+ years of continual shop stops has been scant. With dozens of clean examples all sparkling at one booth, have experienced this only five or six times. Thanks for sharing this nice array of eye opening flats 'n cones.

If anyone plans to pay a visit to that location anytime soon, please let me know. I see at least one can that I'd be interested in, at the price shown. Would also be happy to include a finders/for your trouble fee.

Please pm me if you could assist in the purchase.

Or, as another option, what is the name of the Antique Mall? Website? Phone number? Would much rather have a fellow RB'er handle the can first, but if not possible, could potentially deal with the mall folks long distance. EDIT: I now see the contact info above. Thanks Willssoda.

Thanks!

Bjorn,

I'll send you a pm with some info.

I'm specifically interested in the Royal Amber and red Goetz Country Club. Very curious if the Royal Amber has a replaced lid.

Thank you and I'll get you some contact info, etc.

Bjorn, Any help or better pics on Altes would be much appreciated. $1,000 to much for Buskill considering I had a nicer one that cost me $600. I Did see a couple of can prices that did seem somewhat fair, like the tough Blue & Silver plaid colored Tamo-Shanter American can co flat bottomed cone for $800, ect, ect. LEON.

That Salute is the only known FBIR

Edit see it was already mentioned, I didn't notice it until about my 10th look at the photo but it's pretty obvious. I have wondered if sticking donor FBIR lids on the more common concaves like Berghoff, Beverwick, Duquesne, Ranier, etc was something to watch out for.

The White Horse quart is at 4500.00. A ridiculous price. Not even worth an attempted negotiation.

I'm pretty sure that Salute is not the real deal. The "six lines" version is the older can. The can in the photo is a later in time "four lines" version. It would not make any sense for a variation of the later in time "four lines" version to be a flat bottom. Also the cone and bottom lid just look suspect as well. My two cents.

For sure, even before I noticed the inverted ribs the shiny top didn't seem to fit the can. From my corner of the hobby the discovery of an unknown FBIR would be a match for the Kruger Special, hard to believe another will be discovered this late. But I guess the Salute would be as good a candidate as any, my "4 line" is dated 2/37 so the 6 line was definitely one of the earlier Rainier cones produced.

Is that the add in the cone top bible? I think I saw one in there too but don't have it with me. Most likely they had a test can they used for ads but when production stared they were using the concave cones. But it's certainly possible there were some short runs made of other FBIR's, especially in a big city like SF where dumps are long buried if Rainier ran say 10000 FBIR of some brand none may have survived. We already see the Silver,Phillipsburg J, Hohanadel Bock, etc so we know some cans were produced in small enough numbers to nearly evade us.

Some of the quarts are WAY WAY too high for what they should go for. I don't think they are really trying to sell them. Some are somewhat close to the ballpark. They sure are BEAUTIFUL though!!!

Definitely thin out. Last I stop the store was closed as out of business. Did it reopen or move to a new location? I remember the bush kill at 1,200
