Schaefer flats, Keep them both?

#1

Post by OhioCanGuy »

I sort of dabble in Schaefer flats, especially clean wood grain cans. And even more so, any can with a vanity lid.

Anyway, picked up the can on the left from Bryan (pinnacle-project), here on the RB site, in the Advertise section. I knew it was an upgrade and figured I'd offer my downgrade at an upcoming show to recover some cash.

HOWEVER, as we all do, I compared the new can to my existing can to be sure they were indeed the same.

1. Front label, check
2. Unopened wood grain top lid (love it!), check
3. Brooklyn, NY mandatory, check
4. Canning company? What?!?!?! Different.

Didn't expect that. Again, these are a side collection for me, not my main focus. Didn't realize both American Can Co. and Continental CC both produced this exact can. While I don't generally collect minute variations, I almost feel compelled to hang on to both of these.

So, question is: Is one tougher than the other or are both common as the day is long like most Schaefer cans?

Keep them both... If you get rid of one but later down the road decide you want to collect all the woodgrains, you'll be hard pressed to find the variation you got rid of in good, B/O condition.

Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

Continental can has stronger top lid ink but you gotta love ACC's Keglined box/statement. Sooo ya, keep both!

Different printing makes it a different can so keep both. Keglined vs. NON Keglined is a major enough variation for me to consider it a different can. (I personally do NOT care enough about canning codes to consider THEM different)

Keep them both. I think there is enough difference on the back to make it worth it.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

I'm with everyone else. Keep both. Canning codes isn't a variation to me, but it saying Keglined vs not, that's a true variation.
