Crowntainer questions

#1

Post by stringsx24now »

It is pretty well known that Rice Lake brwg. was the last to use a cone top, in 1960. What was the last crowntainer used, and when? Sometime in the 1950's I know, but a more specific date would be nice.
Also, I have seen some foreign crowntainers, but was there ever any pop put in these type of cans? Pop crowntainers? Never seen an example. Has anyone?
Finally, was Minnesota the furthest west they were used? (Crowntainers)
The books show they were mostly used by breweries in the east and upper Midwest. How often are they dumped out west? I would suspect very rarely?

Eblings was sold out west in Crowntainers, even though produced in NY. Texas is west of Mn. Southern Select crowns would be the furthest west.

Not sure about last company to use Crowntainers. We obviously have Southern Selects here in Texas and have dumped a few east coast brands in East Texas as well. I believe Brad & Dan had the nice find of Eblings Crowntainers under a building in New Mexico but I don't believe there were any canned out west.

Yes, I guess Texas is a little west more than MN. I always just think of Texas as 'south', not really west.
I knew that Ebling was shipped all over. I would guess that is probably the crowntainer dumped most if one is found outside of the southwest.
So far, no one knows which brand was the last one in a crowntainer? Neuwiliers maybe?

we have found a few ADK dumps with Eblings with oval labels dont think we ever found the easy red label one. now got me thinking or wondering... the oval label Js and crowntainers have been dug in Catskills and ADKs - all pre war.. then mostly the red ones are found far, far away from NY city- so did Eblings start to die and they just randomly shipped em away in hopes of selling and making a last attempt of making some money?

I don’t know if soda was ever put into a crowntainer (don’t believe it was), but I have seen 2 of the same crowntainer that had a food related item in them. Some sort of salad oil if memory serves me.

@Leon I've seen the binder version and it looks amazing. A lot of hard work was put into the book but not sure if it will see the light of day. We (the Chapter) would have been willing to invest in a bunch of copies to give away as prizes but not at the cost that was likely going to be asked for the book.

Awesome map!!
Been on your website many, many times and never saw that before.
Now, if someone would just do a map like that for quarts, that would be awesome as well.

Thanks for posting this!

Oh, and per the map, my original comment about Minnesota being the furthest west for crowntainers wasn't really far off, if that.
One lonely brewery way south in Texas really stands out on the map.
