Climb in there and see what you got! Wear good shoes and gloves. A headlamp might help too. Have fun! :smt023

It's anybody's guess as to what you will find but it definitely looks like it could have potential. Just be careful not to destroy anything while you are in there.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

Highly recommend you do a solid check of the walls before and as you head in there. Obviously you'll need somebody outside (i.e. NEVER go it alone). Also recommend you have a rope tied around you and consider belaying inside....check for firm footing before even getting too much slack......

AMEN to ALWAYS dump with a buddy! There's a chance of sewer gas in there, so a rope tied to you and a strong friend is a great precaution!
As you dig down, you may find the floor is suspended trash over a much deeper hole, so be careful!
Good luck!

That sure looks like a Cistern opening. In the old days 1800's early 1900 before indoor Plumbing these were used to hold Water. Usually rain water from off the houses roof ect. Once people got indoor plumbing & stop using these they usually filled it with Trash. These usually not to deep but can get much wider after the initial opening. If you don't find any old beer cans but find some old bottles let me know. I'd be Interested in them. Good Luck, LEON.

Don’t necessarily need to dump with a buddy. Done it alone successfully hundreds of times.

And, it took me a second to realize that the entire thing looks like it’s full of rusty cans!

Make something to fish them out. Don’t even bother going in it. Make a hook, duck tape it to a lengthy pole and carefully extricate them that way. I’ve done this tactic for taking cans out from under sheds....

May be hundreds of successful trips but it only takes 1 for something to go horribly wrong!

Would a big magnet like a speaker magnet on a rope pull cans out of here?

Pulling cans out with rope or magnet won't do much good.. Why, because all the good stuff is probably buried 3 or 5 feet below the top surface. Let me in there, I'll dig them out for you. LEON.

This. This is the theory I’d go about this problem.

No need to even go in the hole. Plus the cans are probably 10 ft down from the opening.

Yes, go dig alone. 3 feet of dirt killed this guy. Go read a little on trench safety. It isn't how deep you are but the amount of dirt that compresses your diaphragm each time you try to take a breath that compresses even more each time. Yes, I am in trenches for a living and have seen guys almost suffocate just buried up to their mid section. Confined space with rotting debris displacing O2 is also no joke.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/mor ... d447a1efbc

all it takes is once. You won't get a second time to make the mistake. You can't smell it, you can't see it. If you go into a confined space without first testing the air with a meter your stupid. Your taking your life in your hands.
WOW! Thanks for posting these articles....the first story seems like a freak accident, but the second on the poisonous gas was eye-opening to me. It will make me think twice about ever entering any confined space. I have heard stories of people being overcome when opening septic tanks, but never realized the other dangers. Scary!

Take a slug hammer to all that concrete, break it up in little pieces & remove it all. now you got one big opening & no confined space. problem solved.
