Remnants of a Collection pick up
A good friend of mine, whom I've known for 25+ years, has a twin brother named Kevin. Don't really know Kevin all that well, and have only seen him periodically over the years. About five years ago I ran into him at some sort of an event and found out he collected beer cans. However, he said he had sold is collection around 2007. Also said he hung onto a few cans that one way or another had a story behind them and he just wanted to keep on the shelf in his home office.
Fast forward to a week ago, he calls me out of the blue and said he wants to sell what cans he has left as a group and asks if I might be interested. Well, heck yeah!! Went over to his house (30 minutes away) last Saturday and made a deal for the cans below.
Back Story 1: For many years, where was a Wiedemann brewery in Newport Kentucky. The brewery closed in 1983. Kevin lived right across the river in Cincinnati at the time. Apparently, the president of the brewery had a 200 can collection in his office. Including the 007 can, Oertel's Thorobred, Wiedemann half quart zip and Iron City zip (which was still full until I drained it this week). As they were preparing to close the brewery, the president said he planned to throw the beer cans in the trash. A woman who was in charge of brewery tours asked if she could have them. She figured they had to be worth a buck apiece. Kevin bought all 200 cans for $200.
Back Story 2: There is a building on the Ohio State University campus called Converse Hall. Converse Hall was built in 1941 and has been used as an ROTC facility every since. About 20 years ago, or so, a guy was running coax cable in the attic of Converse Hall. His foot slipped off whatever he was walking on and went down into the insulation. He heard a crunch. Upon further examination, he pulled out all the Miller and Schlitz cans pictured. Cans are all non-IRTP so were probably put there sometime in the 1950's. A few ROTC boys sneaking up into the attic for a brew or two?
Fun stuff!!

Re: Remnants of a Collection pick up
I noticed the Blatz has the IRTP Statement on top lid. I know there are a few of these out there but gotta be a tougher variation. LEON.

Re: Remnants of a Collection pick up
Very cool story. Anytime you get a call out of the blue and it turns into a 007 can, THAT is a good day. Add the other cans with it and it becomes a GREAT day! Congrats....

Re: Remnants of a Collection pick up
Awesome find and cool back stories!! I especially like the Schlitz misprint (bottom left of pyramid). The slightly offset gold bands almost make that can look like a legitimate variation.

Re: Remnants of a Collection pick up
Holy crap do you have a good eye! I've handled these cans 20 times in the last week and didn't notice that. The guy I picked them up from mentioned that he thought there were 3 variations of Schlitz cans. I could only find the two obvious ones. This is probably what he was thinking of.
Here's the misprint next to the regular can. Might be a misprint but at least it's consistent!

Re: Remnants of a Collection pick up
Thanks for all the nice comments. Always fun to get a new group of cans to sort through.
Obviously, the 007 can is the big dog in this group. After seeing what everyone posted in the James Bond thread and a little homework, I'm 100% convinced that this one is legit. However, as nice as it is, it's not my favorite can from this group. So... what is?
Honestly, the Wunderbrau. These cans are out there, but try finding an all original clean one. Seems like they always have tarnish, humidity, corrosion on the rims, replaced lid, something. This one is as clean as I've ever seen. Really glad to have it. Burger is a slight upgrade. Always good to upgrade an OH can. Stroh's is obviously super common, but again, to get one ultra clean is tough. Been looking for a nice, shiny, no humidity, OH tax stamp one of these for a few years (at least). Only thing that could make this one better is if it was bottom opened. Glad to have it!
Also, please note: The three cans in the second pic of the original post (two zips and Thorobred ring pull) now belong to Jeff Musser (Beercantiques.com). We did a three can for three can, plus some cash, trade deal.

I agree, the Wunderbrau is a beautiful can. Great story and really nice additions to your collection.
