Looks like someone took this one home as a souvenir in 1943! Also thought it would of sold for a lot more too than $3K!

I'd been wanting to hear the story behind it but sure the seller was overwhelmed with questions. Likely some US solider or maybe even a British soldier that served in Egypt brought it or shipped it back to the USA and has since passed on and it showed up in an estate sale.......Great can and pleased to see the seller held out and didn't end the auction earlier......What a great piece of beer can history....congrats to whoever picked it up...

True story: Last night I had that auction open on the eBay app on my phone. I rolled over in bed to address my wife, and when I rolled back, I'd elbow-dialed in a bid for something like 87 trillion dollars. One button-push short of submitted and confirmed.

Shop victoriously. And know where the button is.

3K for that scratched up can? is that can that tough or does the Egypt part make it a lot more valuable?

Any WWII history buffs out there? I'm not doubting that the WF Golden Rod is a super tough can. I'm not doubting this can made it overseas during the war. However, I am trying to figure out how or if it really ended up in Egypt.

Thousands of US personnel fought in North Africa, but very few made it to Egypt. Although the main battle in Africa was fought in Egypt at El Alamein, it was fought between the Germans and British Commonwealth troops. Few if any Americans were stationed in Egypt and those that were, were assigned to the British. Maybe a few were patched up at British hospitals.

How did this Golden Rod get there? Was it brought by the few Americans in their packs? Do we know of any Americans drinking non-olive drab beers in the war zones in '43? Did the British get beer rations from the US through the lend-lease act? Could this can been sent to a US embassy or some other state department (non military) office in Egypt?

Definitely interesting!

@Longhorn Mike I believe these articles will answer many of your questions......note the last paragraph of the Edelbrau article "In the past year (1941) Edelbrau has exported a great deal of beer abroad for use by the British army in Egypt and the Near East".....the others confirm the sale of American beer to both US and British in Egypt.....

I've posted these before. They are dated 3/7/1943 and were taken in Alexandra Egypt. Same time frame as the date on the can. Don't think I see a Golden Rod can in the pictures.

Not sure what is up with the pictures, but every time I post 4 pictures they show in the preview, but 3 are no longer available when I submit the post. Will post on separate posts.

American troops were in West Africa. However, a few liaison officers were probably in Egypt to coordinate with the British. Best guess is that that is the sort of person who would be in a position to get the can, and then keep it for the rest of the war and bring it home. Matt

ANY Golden Rod is a super tough can. Dave Lang, I believe had this identical can but it was rolled. Carl Scheurman got one (IRTP) from Premium Bill's collection. And 5-10 IRTPs were dumped in NY...story is in one of the old RUSTlings....

Thanks, like a lot of flats this is the first time i think I have seen that can, I wasn't sure if the uniqueness of a WF can from Egypt made this one more desirable.

Thanks for the great info! That explains how American beer cans ended up in areas with few-to-no American soldiers.

I wonder if any American canned beer was sent to the Soviets or Chinese through the lend lease act? Anybody want to dump Stalingrad or Manchuria?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but i think there is just one other WF can that's rolled and was mentioned above. Are there any other known WF cans? This one held beer plus even though it's scratched up the scratches show a very cool provenance with the can that actually might make it more desirable to some. The other dumpers Ed mentioned are mostly in poor shape but again very desirable to rusty bunchers.

When I first seen it I figured it get around $5,000 considering rarity. If It got $3 it went cheap :smt017 LEON.

How tough is the Rheingold withdrawn free. Presumably those cans are those although WF could be on the lid.
