My understanding is since they were aluminum they were still available. Right? Wrong? Any examples?

Aluminum? I have never heard that. As far as I know they were all made from steel.

Yes, plenty of withdrawn free OD crowntainers out there.
I shall leave no cone unturned!!

Aluminum was a critical war material and was not available for many of its former uses during the war. Metallic paint uses aluminum, so that's why there were no metallic cans during the war.

Yes as noted by others, plus for the military for non-beer items. See pics from 1942 Brewer's Journal.

Let me rephrase: Were dull gray crowntainers available for domestic purchase during WW2? Was on the crowntainer central website last night and curious.
On a side note are there any of those drinking water crowntainers mentioned above out there?
Thanks in Advance!

After May 1942 the only cans available were those for military use. However, not all cans for military use were olive drab. The OD cans were used in 1944-1945. (I am not yet sure about 1946).

Any cans available on the shelf for consumers after May 1942 were those from the existing stock breweries had on-hand in early 1942.

Crowns were also subject to rationing, which is why many brewers emphasized buying beer in quarts. More beer, but only one cap.

The dull grey Crowntainers would have been front 1941-2, after aluminum was no longer available.

I have the Sea Marker in a J-Spout, but I've never seen it or water in a Crowntainer.
