Rub One Out?
This can that is. Am I correct that when you see primer lines along the seam, the can is likely a paint over?
What are the likely labels to show up under this can? Rub or not to Rub, that is the question.
Per usual, click to super size!

Re: Rub One Out?
Looks like a good candidate, Many different cans can be found under these, try rubbing a small spot in back near seam as a test spot. LEON.

Why not it's not that tough of a can even if you do ruin it. What do you have to lose?

Re: Rub One Out?
Okay, I'm gong to give it a shot and see what's under there. I know a lot has been written/discussed on products/techniques. Could someone point me to the basics. I've not done it before. Thanks!

Re: Rub One Out?
The over spray on the seam looks more white than grey.
I have found the ones I have done like this have only silver under with no other can. Can't hurt to rub a little on the seem to see. Can would still be worth something if you do just a little and find nothing.
I very much hope its a heretofore unknown can!

I've had 2 fox head bocks and a few pepsi's.
Miller High lifes as well. Over the years Specks has kept them on the side if anyone wants them for documentation. Sold the Fox Heads locally though.

Re: Rub One Out?
I do paint overs the old fashioned way. Start with rubbing compound to remove label to the primer, then polishing compound to remove the primer. Less of a chance rubbing through to bare metal. Been working on this one.....
Hopefully your can is a paint over with a gem under it!The federal tax code is 10 times bigger than the Bible with none of the good news

Re: Rub One Out?
Bob,
Maybe back in the day, Land O Lakes were run-of-the-mill flattops, but nice 1/1+ versions bring upwards of $40 nowadays so I'd think long and hard before rolling the dice on taking that one down....

Re: Rub One Out?
Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I'm thinking of just letting this one be. Be a Land O Lakes that is. Can is pretty clean as it is and the seam could be improved with minimal effort.MarkfromIndy wrote: ↑Tue Nov 14, 2017 10:01 pm Bob,

Looks like the mystery of what lies beneath on this can will continue to be unsolved... for now.

Re: Rub One Out?
I would just rub a small spot near the seam to figure out what's underneath. I'll bet this group can figure out the label from just a really small exposed spot. IMO that wouldn't take away much from the value.

Re: Rub One Out?
This can is just like a lottery scratch ticket. If it is worth $40 then part of that price is based on it being a paint over with who knows what underneath.
There might be label underneath that has a greater value, but you won't know until you start rubbing away.
If you rub a small spot, you will most likely find out what you have.
If the small spot shows its a more common can, then I doubt anyone would want to pay full price for it.
Same as I wouldn't buy a "partially scratched" lottery ticket for any price.

Re: Rub One Out?
I was looking for a higher grade Land o lakes flat a few years back. Most all of them had some type of rubbed spot on them. As Mark noted, the clean ones are not as common. In a few years it may be really hard to find one in any shape without a rub spot. Sure there's a chance it could be something odd & rare, but it could be another Miller, Shasta or Falstaff.
