Paint peel remedy/opinions
So I occasionally find cans notorious for peeling paint like kingsbury draft and black label cans for example. The only way to preserve them I could think of is to carefully wrap them with a clear tape to prevent peeling and preserve the rest of the can. My question to you is, would you consider this a touch up and would you buy/shelf a can with this tape?

Re: Paint peel remedy/opinions
So....survey is ambiguous because you asked two questions:
1) Would you consider this touchup
2) Would you buy/shelf a can with tape.
The answer can be yes to one and no to the other. Which question did you mean to ask?

Re: Paint peel remedy/opinions
Touchup - Not touched up, you can remove the tape.
Does buy/shelf mean 'would you buy it and shelf it' or does it mean 'would you buy it or shelf it. I would not buy a can taped together, but I would shelf one that I found and taped.

Re: Paint peel remedy/opinions
I would definitely avoid a can wrapped up in tape but I might make an exception if it was rare and and this was the only realistic way of getting the can.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

Re: Paint peel remedy/opinions
A light layer of clear coat will keep the paint from flaking. I use a spray on.

I vote with Regan.
I have seen (and have a few) cans with peeling paint then clearcoated. Works well.

Ok thanks I’ll have to try that sometime too.
I just hate seeing cans I dug up in such good shape turn to crap.

Re: Paint peel remedy/opinions
Here's some pics of one of the cans in my collection that has had a clear coat applied. You can handle it now without fear of losing more paint.

Re: Paint peel remedy/opinions
Many collectors also use Krylon. A satin finish will look very natural and done properly you can barely tell it is there.
Just make sure that the can is as clean as it is going to get before your clear coat.
Drives me nuts when you can see that the can could have been cleaned better before the spray was applied.

Re: Paint peel remedy/opinions
In Bantam's case, it seems like any opportunity for cleaning is past because more paint would come off. If somebody was clear coating something to slow down further rusting but the paint was still secure, then cleaning would seem more possible.

Re: Paint peel remedy/opinions
Honestly cleaning them doesn’t seem to effect how the paint comes off. Usually by the time I’m home I can tell which cans are worse than others.pinnacle-project wrote: ↑Tue Oct 24, 2017 11:31 am In Bantam's case, it seems like any opportunity for cleaning is past because more paint would come off.
