Cans in Thailand

#1

Post by VNV »

I Have been wanting to share this for a while now.

Some of you might know that I recently sold a big part of my collection (probably 20K cans) that were stored in Thailand.
Most of these were soda and tab US beer cans. So if you ever wonder why there are so many US tab tops in Thailand it probably was me.

Cheers,
Michael

How about a synopsis of the story? Like: are you based over there? Are there many can collectors in Thailand? How the heck did you get close to 20,000 US cans over there without going broke in shipping costs? What was more sought after, beer or pop cans? Any of these collectors BCCA members?
etc.

Yep, all this.

Sounds like a BCCA Magazine article to me. (but share here first)

OK here's a synopsis...

I started collecting when I was about 15 years old, back when I was living in Belgium. Most of my collection back then was local soda and beer cans, yes even water and wine, etc. A couple of years into my collection the internet also became more widely available and became a way of connecting to other collectors. This started trading with several international collectors (Brazil, US, Thailand, Argentina, etc.). So my collection grew to contain a lot of international cans.

After several years of local shows, and international trading my family (I was a late teenager still) moved to the US (in two phases), and about 10K of cans came with me to the States (Virginia). Mostly because we had a relocation allowance and the cans became part of it.

Then came college, work, life, wife (no life :)). Meanwhile I still was collecting all this time, with a varied level of intensity. After about 20-25 years of being stored in Virginia my wife and I (she is Thai), decided to move to Thailand (basically for work and family).

So I had to make a decision what was to happen to the cans, this was a lifelong hobby of mine (as it is to most of us). And after some back and forth the cans became part of another move. (I actually moved all of them myself and brought them to a loading dock and loaded them onto several pallets).

Of course I had not enough space to store all these cans in my in laws' house in Thailand, so I stored them at the top floor of a factory we own.

After living in Thailand for a couple of years, we had two kids, and were doing OK, but had the chance to come back to the US and have our kids become dual citizens. Anyway long story short we decided to move back (this is about 6-7 years ago now) and landed in California. I did bring back some of my collection and instead of collecting all cans decided to focus on certain cans I liked (Coca-Cola, Pepsi, commemorative US soda cans and Japanese beer cans). That meant there were a lot of cans still sitting in storage in Thailand.

A couple of months ago when we went for a vacation we decided (mostly my wife) that it was time to let go of some of my collection. So those are the pictures I posted earlier. I sorted basically through my whole collection in a factory in the middle of farmland in Thailand, with no AC!!! lots of sweat, dead geckos, and tons of cans.

We had some company vans transport the cans I wanted to sell back to my house in Thailand (I still have a house there) and had a little fair at the house. I have known most of the long time collectors in Thailand since I started trading with them in the early 90s. They are also part of several local collecting clubs, mostly Coca-Cola. Some of them also will collect several other things. Like sports cans, Christmas cans, etc.

There are also a few of collectors that collect all cans and even beer cans. As far as I know though none of them were part of the BCCA.

It was a hard thing to let go of these cans as a lot of them brought back memories, but it does give me joy to see other collectors find joy in them. Besides if you would see my house in CA, and my garage you would understand I already collect way too many cans.

Cheers,
Michael

Interesting story. From your story I gather that there are several/many Coca-Cola collectors and general pop collectors over there in that country. With all your beer cans over there now in circulation, maybe a few will move into beer cans a little more. This is better for our collecting community to have more collectors, wherever they are located.
