What is the best dumping find, EVER.

#1

Post by Conehead »

Leon's find for lucky dumper award got me to thinking of the best ever dump find.

Leons surely has to be in the running.

What other DUMPING finds do you think would be in the running for "BEST DUMPING FIND EVER"?

Jim

Wally Gilbert's dance Hall find seems like a good candidate.

I was of course thinking about Wally's dance hall "discovery" but the question was "dumping find", so the dance hall does not count. Nor does the "train station attic" count. I think that it would be difficult to answer this question because you could look at this at least a couple of ways - "greatest quantity"? - "most rare cans"? - some combination of the two? There certainly have been numerous dumps found with hundreds (thousands perhaps) of cans, but that does not mean that they were rare. I do think that either way, that photo Ed offered has to make the top ten. I always have thought that trip was an awesome one and the photo is one of my favorites. Matt

Concur. Good list of large dumps, but there has to be a parallel list of killer finds of rare cans .....Hopfheiser, Rosalie, Triangle, Hillmans Export, Buffalo WF, green Brown Derby, etc etc etc. You do get into a bit of a dilema however.....if you come up with a large find of "rare" cans, they aren't so rare any more. Not sure if these are good examples.....but the Brau Haus, White Horse, Cream Top finds, etc might fit the bill......but I'm obviously not the best to do these lists as I don't track the big finds that closely.

When I saw this post, I too thought about Mark Bryans find of the "test can" and the fact it was filled and sold. In my book that can predates the Krueger Special and is a true beer can (the one he dug) since it was filled. I was lucky enough to get an Alt Heidelberg triangle OI from him that he said was sitting right next to the test can. Closest I'll ever get...

If I remember right I think the Indoor Regal was found in a still in use town dump in New Jersey around 1980, along with 30-50 other cans. All National can co cans & clean indoor found discarded recently in that dump. appeared someone threw there collection away. being all 1936-37 National cans I'd speculate maybe another National can employee or salesman sample collection tossed. If this Qualified it would have to be #1. Think Rogalski's know the details of this find. as he relayed the story to me & Marc at Frankenmuth Summerswap like 10+ years ago. LEON.

Those cans from the New Jersey 1980 mcan were profiles in an old issue of the BCCA mag Dawsons beer playing card quart flats. Forgot these were found in a dump .

From beercanhistory.com:
" (8) "Legendary Finds: New Jersey, 1980": in the April/May 2007 BCCA magazine, Matt Menke described a group of "159" cans that became known to collectors around 1980, which contained flat tops, cones and quarts from around 1935 to the early 1950s. Most of the brands were Eastern, but there also were scattered labels from around the country. Matt heard that the cans had been assembled by a "casual collector" who sometime before 1980, watched as a large group of beer cans were left in a dump and happened to retrieve some of them. Matt wrote: "there was no word on exactly" where the dump was, except the state connected with the story was "New Jersey"; or "what circumstances might have caused" the discarding of a large, diversified collection with many unusual cans from over a 15+ year interval starting in the mid 1930s"

was thinking of throwing that dump out there Mike s.. Dave Langs huge Conifer Dump in ADKs, Dave found the Golden Rod that was possibly unknown at the time ( Can is in usbc ) Charlie Babel wrote about a trip he took there with Dave a few yrs later and mentioned the Golden Rod find. Charlie was kind enough to give me directions in summer of 99 and after a few days at Woodstock Fest we did a quick stop there and as a rookie quickly dug a nice Kings Ale ( that I wished I still had ) flat bottom Js and Kruegers were my 1st digs.. took an old dumping partner there the following summer and he dug up the rest of the G-Rod 6pack. Tons of FB BEVs, more Kings, PON Ale/Beer LO, GEnny Liebos and Light Ales, just a huge 30's dump that lots more kept visiting, and not too far away from TAylor adn Bora's APPOLLO dump - good area... prooly not a top ten for rarity but one of the better dumps in the N East adn many MR Lang found!!

It is truly difficult to have just one best dumping find ever. One that always stood out to me was Tom Chegash's Loewers Quart find in an abondoned well. Part of that was the effort in finding and extracting the cans. One of my all time favorites. Finding cans in dance halls, abandoned houses or other buildings does qualify as dumping. Anything found "in the field" is good to go.

You guys are all missing the LARGEST dumps ever found. I have never been to either of these, but my understanding is they were huge, huge, huge covering 100's of acres: Allison in Michigan, Chris Taylor and his Dad found this; and the Canyon Dam dump in Oregon, or Washington that Nick Johnson found. (Not sure about this but I know someone will provide the details). Soon after being found it was covered over by road construction.

Anything bigger?

Herman Actually Hal pulled 36 Licso's out of the ground while Fearless Freddie stood there watching.
The Maier "Stein Girls" - well Steve - Chris and I went back there even after Hal and I went there and NO MAS!
But Hal and I went back to where Fearless Freddie found his faded surface cans at and found one (FADED - FADED) that went to Daniel Scoglietti who he stills owes me 3 Coors Lite's for! So Maybe in Albuquerque he will FINALLY PAY UP!!!! I tried to get to Daniel in Denver BUT alas he was very much tied up in the Silicon Chapter! roy
