I realized just after convention that I heard not ONE WORD about this can at the gathering. Of course, I did not bring the topic up myself (slipped my mind), but you would think that something, anything, would have been said, showed, discussed, dissed....whatever. Maybe the topic of a special seminar, a giant blow-up picture of the can, or ......I don't know. THE most significant can of the hobby and as someone stated before: poof! and it is gone again.
If the article hadn't had the line about several major collectors eyeballing and verifying the can the one time, I would say red flags all around, but I will have to trust the people who saw/handled it.

I was disappointed that it didn't show up at Canvention so us common collectors could at least view it and get a selfie.......and verify it's reality. I don't understand the collectors that squirrel cans away from the general collecting public like our eyes aren't worthy.
The largest demographic of beer can collectors are now 45-60 years old. After us there is a very small group of young folks that think beer cans are cool. In 20 years Bantam and young folks like him will have killer collections for cheap.
The Krueger can belongs in the Smithsonian.

That is very cool, and, would make sense as I believe the can now resides in the greater Indianapolis area.

Always a great show.

I was kind of hoping "the Dr." got the can. From what i seen in the past he had one killer OI collection with rarity and condition in mind and thought it would fit in best there. There has got to be only a handful of people able to afford such a can no?

I bet this show sees an attendance spike this year. It's a good show even without this attraction.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

I spoke with Gene at the Canvention and he showed me the can on his shelf. He wouldn't say exactly what he paid for it but he did say it was over $150,000. I believe it was $150,000 - $180,000.

I spoke with Gene at Canvention also, but not about price. I figure if he wants me, or the world, to know, he'll let it out. There's really no comparison amongst cans that have sold in the past 30 years, but six figures seemed inevitable.

If I find a Waldorf Bock, it's going on my shelf.

It will be interesting to see if the Krueger Special comes up for sale or is more of a private placement....along with the one of a kind Fox Deluxe.

I would expect that Gene kept the Krueger's Special, though I don't know whether he did or not.

What do you mean by "came up for sale" exactly? Nothing has been listed as for sale anywhere yet, but cans are moving now that the email blast went out a couple days ago. Is this activity "private placement" or "up for sale"?

I heard second hand that the Krueger's Special was available as of yesterday. I believe the asking price was being withheld for only serious buyers - as in "are you going to buy it?", and was not being divulged otherwise, which makes sense to me. And although some claims have been made on this site and elsewhere as to what Gene paid for it, I believe those claims, all of them, to be inaccurate.

I spoke to Gene about the can at a show, and he told me as much. He was baffled as to where the numbers were coming from. The same thing happened when the nice Class Beer sold. Several guys threw wildly different numbers around, apparently thinking they would be thought of as "cool" because they revealed a number that was theoretically revealed to them (and them alone) in confidence. I'm not sure how that adds up.

I have my own ideas about both cans based on various clues, hints, and tidbits gleaned over the years from the buyers, but I do not know the actual purchase price of either. I just don't think Gene ever divulged the figure. Gene called me from the road on the way back home from Oklahoma with the can in his possession, unable to contain his excitement, but he never stated definitively what he paid. As in all such matters, I understand that I could be wrong on every count.

The Fox Deluxe was pictured in print advertising, but was not known to exist until this example turned up a few years ago. It came out of a collection that also included the only ongrade Dingle Bay Cream Ale that has surfaced in the hobby thus far.

It was pictured in a couple different color ads in industry trade magazines like Modern Brewer or Brewer's News in late 1936. I'm not at home and don't have the photos on my phone. One of them is in the USBC-OI, and I believe Leon has one or both of the original trade magazines. The ad shown in USBC-OI also show the Hillman's OI that was unknown for so long. The Regal OI is shown as well, and the ad was known before the cans turned up 1980-ish.

I'm too stupid to figure out how that @Leon thing works, but I'm sure he'd be happy to post the ads if he reads this.

Thanks, Leon. I didn't know Kevin got that from you. It had appeared in a can book in black and white decades ago, and I didn't realize it was a color ad until Dave Lewandowski showed me a photo he had taken of one.
