Schlitz 8oz paper label flat test

#1

Post by zoinkss »

Every once in a while I get to speak with someone from American Can Co. who knew my dad. Recently ran into someone who knew him and worked with him. I answered an ad for a bunch of canning plant cans but it was 5 minutes too late. Someone in Kenosha got there first. Luckily, he had a few nice surprises for me when I stopped by. I ended up with a handful of great lids including an early zip lid and this paper label schlitz 8oz. All for a decent price.
When I got home and looked, the wording on the back of the label was just a bit different. The one I bought states "Blending of ten different malts and three different hops". The one I have in my collection reads "blending of many fine ingredients including ten different malts and three different hops".
Also "vigorous refreshment" vrs "robust refreshment".

Does anyone have this version of the paper label?

I believe I posted my 2 on here before with very little or maybe no Interest or comments. LEON.

P.S. My 2 are the much rarer Aluminum versions. seems 99% of them are steel.

Thanks Leon,
Is your newer version air sealed?
I got mine from a can worker at the plant so I was thinking its a prototype.
Wish we could get a few people here to check and see if anyone has this version on their shelves.
I wonder why the paper labels don't have any canning plant info on them?

Thanks Bjorn,
That one is also in perfect shape minus what looks like a single opener on the top.
Still wondering if it is a prototype. Leons is Aluminum and in perfect shape. Mine is steel and air sealed and perfect.
Still would like to see if others have one or not.
For some reason the 8ozs just don't seem to generate a lot of interest.

I do have the can you mentioned in this blog. In fact, I have the same paper label in both a bank top and a super soft top.
Will post pics later.

Thanks, looking forward to the pics.
I see a lot of the regular story ones both nice and dumped and have production stamps.
The 2nd story one seems only to be in pristine shape. Still would like to find someone out there with a dumped version or stamped on bottom to show it was regular production. Being in Milwaukee, I have found a lot of Schlitz test or prototypes not in the book. I would like to categorize this one definitively.

I have seen other stout versions of this with that version of story on back but not the regular Malt Liquor.
Until this one popped up.
I am still leaning towards a mistake or test for this story-line on the regular 8oz malt liquor paper labels. Even the one pictured that has a punch hole is in pristine condition.
What I didnt know was that there are aluminum versions of this out there. Leon's can is exceptional and I have never see one before and it does not sound like there are any other 8oz all aluminum versions.

Having come across a lot of Schlitz workers locally and finding lots of test cans through them, my gut is telling me they were playing around with the writing and they specifically chose story 1 for the 8oz regular and story 2 for the stout version. Somehow, either by test or by mistake, the regular 8oz can got story #2 on it. I will wait to see if any dumped versions of the Malt liquor cans pop up with story #2.

Not specifically related to the paper label but on the aluminum side you might want to hit up @Robert F since I know he picked up an aluminum 12oz version at a show a little while back. I've never seen one since.....it would be interesting to see what story line it matches....

Here are mine. 3 different ML cans. The SML can also has a diff saying on the back. Both my lager cans, paper & ss and as are the same.

So it looks like 4 diff sayings between the ML, lager and SML

btw - there was a old post about the 8oz alum can in this series; I am sure Leon and I was involved

My original objective in this post was to ascertain which stories on the paper label existed and if there were any dumped versions of each so that we can rule out any of them being test variations of the story.
From the posts, it looks like the stories evolved in use and between all the ML and sML 8 oz cans there are 4 different stories.
I am still wondering which ones are on the paper label 8 oz ML cans. Are all 3 stories or all 4 stories on the paper label ML 8 oz cans. I think I still have only seen the 2 paper label 8 oz ML stories. Can someone show the 3rd?

Over the weekend I picked up two new 8oz schlitz. One 1963 still full embossed with early pull ring vanity.
The other a 1968 embossed with a ground off steel lid. Were they still using steel lids in 1968?
Pics below. Neither are paper but it seems funny that there would be 1963 aluminum versions and then 1968 versions with all steel.
