Looking for advice

#1

Post by chrisserna »

Hi everyone, I recently started collecting vintage beer cans and I'm looking for advice on preservation and display techniques. Does anyone have experience with maintaining the condition of older cans, especially in terms of preventing rust and fading? Also, I'd love some creative ideas on how to display them in a way that really shows off their unique designs. Thanks in advance for your help!

Run a dehumidifier and cover any windows.
There are many ways to display, some use wood shelves, some use glass shelves some are even behind glass.
I'm a simple wood shelf guy.

Besides this website there is a program written by one of our collectors, Randy Karasek. It's called the BEER MAGAZINE VIEWER. He has negotiated rights to include The BCCA Magazine at certain time intervals. Currently his inventory is through the end of 2022. I just checked and found an article in the Sep/Oct 2022 issue on exactly that topic. Here it is. Click to enlarge.

There's like a part two in the Sep/Oct 2023 issue. I have that issue but I don't think I can legally share here.

Here's some info for you:

BEER MAGAZINE VIEWER (BMV) - https://www.mbcinfo.com/BMV/

Rusty Bunch Membership -- https://www.therustybunch.com/forum/pro ... embership/

BCCA Membership - https://bcca.com/general/register_member_type.asp?

Local Chapters are also an excellent resources.

As Danny mentioned above, humidity and sunlight are probably your biggest enemies. I have my cans on shelves in a portion of my basement that has no windows, so no issues with sunlight. Sometimes humidity in basements can be an issue but if you have year around heating and cooling, a basement is not a bad place for humidity. If you do not have air conditioning in your house, running a dehumidifier can be a good option.

Have you been to any shows yet? Shows are a great way to meet people and get questions answered. Here is a link to shows listed on this site:

There is also a list of events on the BCCA and NABA sites.

Welcome to the hobby!
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

2023 Shows Attended

* Michigan Chapter Winterfest, January 14, Frankenmuth Michigan
* Cabin Fever Reliever, February 24, Mishawaka Indiana
* Buckeye, March 11, Toledo Ohio
* SummerSwap, July 21 & 22, Frankenmuth Michigan
