Test can values are hard to predict in my opinion. I used to think that there were only about a 12 pack of these 12 oz soft cross cans out there. Now I'm tracking almost a case....and it's hard to keep track.
I've seen them go from $20 to $440.....

I thought this one might slide under the radar but it didn't, 3 day auction and you had to look close, I didn't notice it until this morning and there were only a couple of bids at the time.

I was watching that one also.

It went waaay to high. Notice the missing paint on the flat bottom in a couple of places.
I shall leave no cone unturned!!

Yes, there was a much nicer FBIR earlier this year that went for less, it's not like the other 2 cans were much for deal sweeteners. But like we have seen a lot in this thread, it only takes 2 guys who really want it to drive up the price.

Seller is Scott McClure, son of the late, and longtime Canvention attendee, Bob McClure. Scott collects but is selling off part of his Dads collection. I had planned to put in what I thought would be a nuclear bid and would be sure to win the can.

Um... I was wrong.

Of note, the winning bidder has a feedback rating of 2. New money coming into the hobby?
Also of note, there were 4 unique bidders from $330 on up. Wow.

Interesting... I have legit version of both the flat top and ring pull (fan style) of this can label. Both are National can company as this one, my flat has the same seam as this "bottom opened zip", but my ring pull has the typical notched seam National used mid 60's onward. I may not know much about tabs and zips, but know better than to spend >$500 on a third generation zip that doesn't jive with the dates the seam construction indicates with this can company.

I hope someone is much wiser than I, just sayin'

I assume it's a zip collector. I've seen people pay stupid money for a zip of a fairly common can.

I believe that I have seen 2 of that Buckeye Zip Auctioned on eBay over the past two years, and I want to say that one went around $95ish, and the other for about $125. Congrats I guess to Scott McClure for listing his at the right time for the right bidders. I was thinking the same way you were Bob. I was wrong as well...

That's not the point. Guys specializing in these need to educate themselves a bit more before shelling out this kind of dough. I've seen some obvious re-lids being bought at very steep prices... mainly because they were bottom opened zips or rings. When there's a market, people will supply. I personally am glad Art refuses to lid these any longer, but there are others (not advertising services) that are skilled in the craft.

Not saying this one was a re-lid, but having both the flat and ring pull of this can, I saw the seam on this can and thought it pre-dated the seam construction National used in the mid 60's on zips and ring pulls. This seam design matches the flat top I have, and is earlier in design than the ring pull I have. To me, the seam doesn't jive with a 1964-1965 National Can Comp. zip top lid on top (this wasn't the earlier finger slicer zip on the first and second gen early 60's zip tops). I see these, and automatically am very cautious. Lower price flats can very easily be re-lidded is so desired; the same as tabs can easily be re-lidded as flats. I feel others apparently don't mind, or are very clueless.

That is an amazing price but it's not like they come along every day.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.
