Goebel changing their logo from the "Square Shoulder" to the more American looking bird after Poland was invaded is the story I have heard also.

Many U.S. breweries with ownership of German heritage made similar changes in the late 1930's and early 1940's. An issue of the Beer Cans Monthly newsletter features an excellent article entitled 'The De-Germanization of U.S. Beer Cans', which shows a number of other examples.

Leading up to WW II, a piece of the history of the time might be that the earliest Coors "Double Aged" flats had their back panel changed in 1936 from "... with the finest Bohemian hops ..." to just "... with the finest hops...". This may have been due to shortages, costs, or rising concerns about Germany?

Watneys Chistmas 1.jpg
On the other side of WWII - so a reflection of cold war history, here are two different WATNEY'S PALE ALE cans that have lids stamps "SPECIALLY CANNED FOR MEGATON TRIALS | OPERATION GRAPPLE CHRISTMAS ISLAND". Operation Grapple occurred from 1956-1958 and was a series of tests that led to the U.K. proving it had an H-Bomb.
Expired once again in Portland ...
Still musing about cans

The can on the left looks like something Hitler might drink from so Goebel changed to the can on the right.

I don't think so. There were a few experiments with soda in cans as far back as 1938 (Cliquot Club, in low-profile cones), but soda really didn't start to be sold in cans much until the early 1950's. I believe the canning companies had issues with carbonated beverages--a soda might explode or leak along the seam more easily than beer would.
