Bob Porter's Collection Pics

#1

Post by e61096 »

Saw Larry H. over the weekend at the Horlacher show in Macungie, Pa
I had him email me a few pics to share with everyone.
Bob had a great Pa collection, a lot is not shown here

Per Larry : Keep in mind that not all PA brewers were on the shelves. Bob was especially into Schmidt's and Scheidt variations

You will see what looks like common cans but they're obscure variations ENJOY:

Looking at it through my OI glasses.....the Valley Forge run.....from Bocks, to Quarts, to the "OD", to all the variations....one can only dream. Is that white VF an OI I wonder?

Multiple cans that I'm certain are rare and I don't even know enough to recognize as such. Can't get past the Neuweiler Bock, Playmate set, Royal Farm, numerous variations that I didn't even know existed. :smt007

Thanks for the can porn. At least I will dream well tonight. :smt015

Bobs collection is in the process of being sold. I am sure Larry Handy will be bringing some of the cans to Spring Thaw.

I would bet a lot of those "commons" would be impossible to get on grade today.

Really enjoyed the pictures. Where was the Germantown?

I believe the Germantown and maybe a couple other tough Philly cans were sold a while back to generate cash to buy a bunch Scheidt/Valley Forge flat sheets. And yes, some of these cans will be a Spring Thaw...

The second white Valley Forge is not an OI, but it is rare. According to Bob the brewery did not like the plain white version so immediately switched to the striped version. I do not know about the white one among the OIs.

Bob's collection is wonderful.

Never seen the Ortlieb's bicentennial cans with the Phillies baseball players on them. Test cans I assume? Are there many out there?

The Ortleib's cans are paper labels wrapped around a can. They have the mandatory on them, so I would expect that they were planned by the brewery but never made as cans. The collection also includes the Fairmount Trolley can (a real can) which was never filled and is extremely tough.

I have the trolley can (i.e. my interest in the 2 Philllies player's labels....I always like to add to a set of cans). I was told there were only 15 of the trolley cans made, don't know how many are out there though. I have only seen one for sale in the last 30 year and I bought it. Got to love a "True" test can that is not a misnomered misprint.
