Re: Repainting and repair?
I avoid cans that have been touched up with paint. A bath in oxalic is okay. Some touched up cans have slipped into my collection by accident. I am scheduling some cans to start on ebay tonight and just discovered a Bulldog with a little touch up. I will note it in the auction because touched up cans are not as accepted as they were 20 years ago.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

Re: Repainting and repair?
I posted this in a previous discussion on an eBay can that had been touched up a couple of weeks back, re-pasting here. I'm with pinnacle-project in general, repainting cans is not a good idea.
I think "restoring" cans was pretty popular in the late 70s and early 80s. The Beer Can Collectors Bible had several paragraphs on how to "touch up" or "repaint" cans...... I have cans that have been repainted and was guilty of doing that myself back in the day.
Excerpt from Beer Can Collectors Bible - Pg 23 (first published in 1977):
PAINTING CANS
"Although a touched-up can will never look as good as the original, defects may not be apparent from distances of two or three feet. Moreover, nobody wants to display untouched-up or rusty cans side by side with mint cans. So, according to your capabilities, painting or repainting or touching up cans is necessary - inevitable."
The times and attitudes on repainting have definitely changed.

Re: Repainting and repair?
Just wondering what caused the shift from an acceptable practise to not acceptable?...was it just a purist thing, or too many poor touch up jobs?

Re: Repainting and repair?
I think it was increasing awareness and demand for original v. restored cans and antiques. In rust we trust. Rust is the patina of confidence. I have a few cans that were crudely repaired/touched up before I bought them, likely originating from 1970s collectors. I have since tried avoiding cans like these.Canadacan wrote:Just wondering what caused the shift from an acceptable practice to not acceptable?...was it just a purist thing, or too many poor touch up jobs?

Re: Repainting and repair?
I doubt that this repaint job fooled too many people.
Saw it on eBay and had to have it. Thanks P***66!
I would like to unpaint it but don't even know where to unbegin!

Re: Repainting and repair?
I'm a little less of a touch up hater than most, but my purchases are not sky high. If I'm spending $100 or more I definitely want to know what amount of touch up has been done as to accurately assess the value for myself. Some cans - like the Regal Amber that just ended (I was the $16 boost there at the end but it wasn't enough), and like my Palomar, would probably have been priced out of my range if they did not have the touch up.
Here's the touch up test I did on the Marlin I picked up last year. It only required a cheap black light flashlight and some careful observation: http://www.therustybunch.com/phpBB3/vie ... ar#p354268

Re: Repainting and repair?
I'm not a fan of touch up paint, but it's not absolutely a deal breaker for me either. I do have a touched up Schlitz copper flat top that made it onto my shelf, and while I'm not happy that it had been touched up, I am happy to have that can in my collection.

Re: Repainting and repair?
I probably have less than ten touched up cans on the shelf. But my view is that if it is unlikely you will ever get the can without a little touch up, then it's just something we have to live with. However, I do draw the line on what would be massive touch up since at a certain point, its not really the original can anymore.

Re: Repainting and repair?
What he said.......Out of several thousand cans....I have maybe 5 long ago touched up cans.....all ones I will never see or will never be able to afford in grade 1 condition.Matt Menghini wrote:I probably have less than ten touched up cans on the shelf. What is the general opinion on cleaning/buffing up rusty rims on lids? That I did do to a few cans when I first started collecting back in the 1970's....

Re: Repainting and repair?
I have some cones like that. It is okay. I see that as being similar to removing/reducing rust with acid.jinsequa wrote:What is the general opinion on cleaning/buffing up rusty rims on lids? That I did do to a few cans when I first started collecting back in the 1970's....

I have an IBC, a Pabst bock and ABC from St Louis with patchwork and paint. I compromised because they were affordable.

Re: Repainting and repair?
For me the #1 requirement is that the can was filled with beer. I will take a touched up can over a rolled or a test can. That said I try to avoid restorations unless it is a can I know I probably may never get all original. I have bought a couple of cans that were advertised as restored, if I had it to do over I wouldn't have. Since buying a black light I found 2 more of my cans that were touched up, beware of black cans that have no scratches or chips in the black paint, they are easy to touch up with a marker.
