ROSALIE on ebay

#1

Post by Cap-Sealed »

I see my old Rosalie is on ebay. I had 3 at the time - one is on the shelf, one went to Rand (Herman's old one) and this one (used to be Jeff Pudgerski's) went to the Lew. Bros (btw - I heard of them is a closet collector!)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rosalie-Pilsner ... SwjDZYZcUM

I wonder how much it will sell for?

The seller is a nice guy from Baton Rouge who I used to see at the Dixie Show. He has posted on this board in the past.

He was one of the first guys to have a line on the Italian diggers. I traded for a decent olive drab Rheingold back in the day before there were many known from him.

Mike, the seller gave me one of those Rheingold ODs just for taking him dumping!

This is one of the Texas dumpers, right?

Way out of my budget but really enjoying watching this auction.
Curious as to if this will set a record price for a dumper can.

Not that I could afford to be in this race at all but how could you bid $1958 and then think adding $50 more to push it over $2000 was too much? I know the $2K barrier is a B+I+G barrier but it might have snuck in for the win. I have NO IDEA what it is worth and that might have already been too much but it was exciting to watch. Congrats to Ed the seller and also to the winning bidder. Historic cans are fun to watch........ :smt023

I hate coming in second on Ebay. 4th or 5th, fine. But not 2nd.

I always determine my top dollar, with shipping, then add something to that. I figure at that point if I don't win I was already stretched and the other guy can have it.

As Ricky Bobby said in Talladega Nights: "If you ain't first, you're last"

Love that quote, bad grammar and all!

I think I paid about $350 for the exact can from Tommy Leo who got it from Jeff Pudgurski when he sold his 5000 can flat top collection back in ~1995-ish. Since I already had one, I sold/traded it to the Lew Bros.... $2K is a pretty good chunk of change.

Holy cow! $1900 for that can? I don't collect flat tops but am curious what makes this one so special, it looks a cool can and I am sure it is rare but there must be some other history to it.

Ha! Never mind a little googling tells me it was co-owned by Al Capone, that is cool!

An indoor Rosalie on ebay 10 years ago or so was the first beer can to crack $10,000...or was it the $17K Clipper that came first? After those sales, prices for rare cans broke the 5 figure barrier and is the new norm.

It was a little over 10k on the Rosalie since that was my bid.... I only know because I was the second bidder and the good Dr. won it. Those were the days with lots of disposable income before I was married.

I agree, and I usually employ a bidding strategy like yours. In a few extreme cases, I've used "the nuclear option" and bid far more than I thought the can was worth. I've won at a fair price twice with this strategy (or lack thereof?), but I was first loser last time I tried it. I've never been so happy to lose, even before acquiring a much nicer example of the can at a fair price a month later.

Value is a function of Scarcity/Condition, but a third contributing factor is Desirability. This can's value is driven up way beyond the usual S/C formula just like a 007 can. For a similarly low grade rare can, S/C might = $500. But for Rosalie, S/C x D = $1983.58

Agreed but if you think about what a grade 1 would sell for which would be well into the 5 figures and 90% of us can't afford... most of us can scape together 2,000 if we really want a dumper.

Goodbet50......it's not bragging rights at all. If you collect just illinois cans and a Rosalie comes up, there are a few things to consider. First, I am 58 years old. Second, the top example will cost you about 125,000 the next one in line would be anywhere from 10,000 to 30,000. Then it gets interesting. The next best one is ed scoglettis, younger than me doesn't need the money and is passionate about his chicago cans. He will take it to his grave and I will be long dead. The same goes for Rand who I believe has the 4th best one. I am unaware who has the 5th best one. The one just on ebay ( continued)
