ANOTHER ADOBE WALL FIND
Xmas came early for us.....My friend "Randy" got a lead on an old bar in Northern New Mexico that needed to be cleaned out and called me since I'm a beer guy. It was like an episode of pickers.....we got 1 juke box, 3 table top juke boxes,3 old soda machines, old coinop pool table , old cash register, 2 killer beer signs , 2 neon beers signs , searched every nook and cranny and came up with a bunch of smalls. There were cases and cases of old liquor from the 70's when they were last opened.A lot of that was the cheapest liquor made MD2020 and Thunderbird and Colt 45 40oz. We took a few cases each of that as they were just going to throw it out. Just when we thought the day couldn't get any better, Randy noticed the part of the wall falling down had cans in it! All 50s stuff but cool that I got in on an actual adobe find (usually my picker friends just bring the cans to me). Took home around 200 cans only because the bottom parts of the walls the cans were frozen. If they were closer to the inside walls, just wash the mud off but if closer to the outside they were exposed to the elements and were trashed. Threw away 300 cans , I refuse to take any Coors home ...Sorry Scott. We are going back Xmas week.

Re: ANOTHER ADOBE WALL FIND
Cool find! How big was the building? Do you have any picks of it before it was demolished? I can't quite picture an adobe building. Thanks

looks like regular house...adobe bricks and then chicken wire over the sides and then stucco ( a cement like mixture) over thatSoCal wrote:....... I can't quite picture an adobe building. Thanks
The cans are used because it requires less mud , plus the dead air inside the sealed cans make for great insulation

Judging by the lids they probably went to the local bar to ask for some cans to use.

Re: ANOTHER ADOBE WALL FIND
More from the bar find............I always wanted a small cash register for my home bar, although I wanted the more ornate nickel plated ones , this one has a great history and will do....it is what they call a "barber shop" or candy store" size.............the bonus was when I pulled it away from the wall , it had this A-1 ale sign on it
check out the Hamm's glassware drying rack...notice it has the "Refreshing as the land...." slogan (out west) instead of "from the land....."
I have one guy interested in it but may end up keeping it
know anyone who needs a full Colt 45 40oz ??!!

Re: ANOTHER ADOBE WALL FIND
Dan....not sure how long the bar might have been operating but a quick look at newspapers.com it looked like Olympia made it's way into newspaper advertising there in New Mexico for the first time in March 1975. Yeah there was this odd personal from 1962 but have no clue what that was all about.
June 1962 Alamogordo
March 1975 Albuquerque
Apr 1975 Las Cruces
May 1975 Las Cruces
Jul 1975 Albuquerque
And I bet that is what this guy was screaming for.......

Re: ANOTHER ADOBE WALL FIND
That scourge from Olympia sure spread all over. By the 70's that beer was almost as awful as Rheinlander. I have no idea why it did so well.
Those are great finds from the bar and from the walls Dan. Thanks for sharing.

Re: ANOTHER ADOBE WALL FIND
I'm not old enough to have drank Oly from the 70's, but the taste and their marketing must have been good enough to compete with Coors until the late 70's for dominance in the west. Olympia (and Coors) took out all of the western heavyweights from the 50's and 60's including Lucky, Burgie, Blitz and Rainier. Oly was Clint Eastwood's favorite so the beer was in the Dirty Harry and Every Which Way but Loose movies. It was in a ton of other movies that took place in California in the 60's and 70's.
I think Oly got caught by surprise (like tons of other brewers) with the light beer craze and was never able to catch back up. Once they sold out to Pabst, it was game over.
I drank some Oly while skiing in California in the early 90's and it was just like every other cheap beer. They sold the cool Oly snow skiing can at the Heavenly ski resort in Tahoe.

Re: ANOTHER ADOBE WALL FIND
I think the "beer can filler" construction method must have been a Northern New Mexico thing. I've checked out dozens of old adobe buildings here in Southern NM and never found a single thing used as filler in the walls.
I dump cans and cars, if you find old cars & trucks while dumping, please let me know.

Re: ANOTHER ADOBE WALL FIND
Here's a clue....99% of the time, they are in the interior walls. What we were dealing with here was a later addition where they used on the exterior walls.fiat128 wrote:I think the "beer can filler" construction method must have been a Northern New Mexico thing.
