Re: Rarest 10 Half Quarts?
Been thinking about BeercanPete's list
Since I posted realized I did not put the Burgie from Longview on the tab list - two I know of. So I have 11 cans there now as not at all sure which to take off, hard to imagine but on pure scarcity it might bump either the Mannchester or the Altes or the 15oz Boh Club. Man - tough call!
Probably a big debate on the rarity issue - is the mandatory on the can or a variant make It more rare than when a much more common flat comes as a tab - or same question when a common tab comes also as a factory tab.
I struggle with 3 of the top 10 flattop 16s being cans that normally came as a tab and then either due to timing of a change to tabs, or likely in the case of all three suggestions - Soul, white Natty and Coors - more likely due to what was used at the plant. So I have to go with a difference in the label vs the difference of the top.
Then the other issue is desireable vs rare. I have to bump the Argonaut even tho I don't have one as I could have on three occasions have gotten an off grade one.
My suggested top 10 then with additions in red and stike thru those I would replace
10 rarest flats:
224-14, Argonaut
226-32, Bull Dog Ale
unlisted, Burgermeister "All Aluminum Can"
227-13 Busch (Aged "Slow-Cold" - Tampa)
228-5, Coors
229-20-5 Fisher - (15oz) (No Blue Band) (Salt Lake City)
229-21 Fisher - (15oz) (With Blue Band - Premium Light) (Salt Lake City)
230-13, Hamms
unlisted, National Bohemian white can
232-28-5 National Bohemian (Miami) ( 1/2 QUART at top)
234-17, Red Cap Ale
unlisted, Regal FT, shown in this thread
234-23 Regal Select (New Easy Opening Alum in BLUE)
235-3, Ruser
236-6, Soul ML
As far as I know on the ?
"adds"
Busch - Aged Slow Cold Tampa - I know of two
Fisher - 15oz Salt Lake - without blue band - I know of only one
Fisher - 15oz Salt Lake - with blue band - I know of three
Natty Boh - Miami - I know of two total and they are variations - one is in the book
Regal Select - with blue on 'Newest easy open.." I have never seen one in person - only two in the two books
All unique "printed" labels - max of three each
Then as for tabs - here I would leave the Krueger as so tough either flat or tab.
Lone Star is popular but at least 8 I know of
The Cold Brau ZT is not a flat with a ZT lid - but a different color combination than the flat - know of 2, maybe 3
So only the one edit
10 rarest tabs:
138-9, Altes
141-27, Bohemian Club
144-1, Bull Dog Stout
145-6 Burgermeister (1964) Longview, TX
146-23, Calgary Malt Lager
146-24, Calgary Malt Liquor
147-1, Carling Malt Lager
147-11 Cold Brau (Dark blue trim - zip top)
154-22, Krueger
154-29, Lone Star
156-9, Mann Chester
162-28-5, Regal ("Tastes Like Fassbier", shown in this thread)
It is possible that the Dawson Lager and Gablingers - Doesn't Fill You Up have fewer know examples than some of the others - so honorable mention
My humble opinion certainly to be debated.

Re: Rarest 10 Half Quarts?
My thanks to Storzman for the detailed response! Love it! 16's RULE!!storzman wrote:Been thinking about BeercanPete's list ...
I actually defer to Storzman in ranking some of these, as it's clear he knows more about them than I do. A couple of comments, not in any order ...
1. I love the new photos on this post! Someone mentioned Tuxedo 51 ... I thought about that one too. I think there might be a few more available than the others on the list, but definitely a worthy candidate--you never see those.
2. I thought I remembered that the Burgermeister 145-6 from Longview was a mistake in the book?? Must be thinking of some other can ... definitely a tough one.
3. I had the same issue with those "flats that should be tabs" ... I think they are neat cans, but leaving them out probably makes this a better list.
4. Never realized how tough some of those cans are ... no wonder I can't cross the "easy" Regal 234-23 and 15 oz. Fisher off my want list.
5. I think the Dawson "Gold Crown" (228-8 as a flat, not shown as a tab) is tough, but not as tough as the newer Dawson 148-24. Neither flat nor tab is common, but they are probably more available than the other cans that made the cut.
6. Going back to my other thread, between the ABC (224-1), Bull Dog Ale, Brau Haus, Dutch Lunch, L&M, and Royal ... anyone know which is toughest? Should Bull Dog Ale be on the list and the others miss the cut?
7. Amazing that Lone Star should be kicked out--but it sounds like "8 known" is actually too many to make the list.
Love this stuff, keep it coming everyone!

That Krueger zip is awesome, those tall beer gum drops are really tough whether Newark or Cranston - flat or zip

Re: Rarest 10 Half Quarts?
I have one too, maybe a touch nicer than the one Al (Mr. President) has. Funny thing, I have never seen or heard of a 12 oz. zip for this can, or a 16 oz. zip Cream Ale. I always assumed they had some extra stock and made a very short, very late run of zip tabs with this design.storzman wrote:That Krueger zip is awesome, those tall beer gum drops are really tough whether Newark or Cranston - flat or zip

Re: Rarest 10 Half Quarts?
Bringing this cool post back from the dead! Would either of these 2 make the list? The Krueger Cream Ale Great ‘gumdrop’ is from NJ which is not listed in book and Dan sold an Elder Brau for some good money. Assume @kruegerbock, @beercanpete or @storzman might have the Krueger ‘gumdrop’? Willing to part with the Krueger for the right offer.

Re: Rarest 10 Half Quarts?
Very few collections here in the Pacific Northwest have this 15 ounce can in it. I know I don't have one. It was on Eric's original list, but I think it was overlooked by others on this thread.

Re: Rarest 10 Half Quarts?
I’m not sure how many are out there, but the 16oz Black label from Cleveland does not seem to common. It was filled the same time as the red cap and they were all sold out of state since Ohio didn’t allow the sale of half quarts. I found a few in north Georgia years ago. I think they mostly sold them in the south until the Atlanta brewery came online.

No question, the blue and gold is the harder one to find. Not that the red and gold one is easy...Here are a pair from Eric’s list. They will be sideways, as usual. Any thoughts on which one is tuffer?
I have the red one, but the blue one has eluded me for a decade.

I have an extra off grade Portland blue one that is not bad if you want a placeholder till something on grade comes along.Pokey wrote:No question, the blue and gold is the harder one to find. I have seen a lot less of the unlisted Spokane only blue ones than the Portland version.
