Want to welcome Dgcans a new member to the board
Just wanted to give a warm welcome to Dgcans one of the newest RB members. I had the pleasure of meeting Dennis and his father Gerald at the Summerswap and introduced him to the Rustlings and talked about dumping. Dennis is a young gentleman from Southern Illinois that indicated he had already found gold O/I Buds on some of their property and was excited at the possibility of finding more variations of cans. We talked about oxalic acid and cleaning cans. Dennis is a newly inspired collector that I believe got an interest after his father was a collector when he was younger. He doesn't have much of a collection and I'm sure would welcome some help from the board to build up his collection.........

Dennis,
If you are looking to build your collection be sure to contact me--I'm sure I can share at least a few cans with you. A lot of cans in my totes are getting "stale" and I'd rather they were in your collection than my attic!

Hello all, I'm grateful for the warm welcome. The legends are true about the gold O/I buds and it's driving me crazy about getting back there. I'm a new collector but I'm really fascinated with O/I cans and flat tops in general. My address is:

Hey, Dennis. Welcome. I know Hoyleton very well. I grew up in Salem, about 40 miles away. I don't want to discourage you, but that part of Illinois is tough dumping. If you can find things there, you are good at this.

Re: Want to welcome Dgcans a new member to the board
I've been digging the past week and found a few more gold O/I buds and some Quaker State Oil cans. Also found some cast iron toys that I believe are from the 1930's! It's tough, but I'll get to them eventually!Tom Hoefer wrote:Hey, Dennis. Welcome. I know Hoyleton very well. I grew up in Salem, about 40 miles away. I'll be sure to do that Keith, I'm going to try oxcilic acid for the first time tonight on some random cans so hopefully that goes well. I'll take a bunch of pictures as I go.keithker wrote:Dennis......BTW post some photos and story in the dumping trips and stories forum when you get a chance.....

Re: Want to welcome Dgcans a new member to the board
Dennis-
If you are able, come to the Belleville beer can and breweriana show on November 12. It's a huge show at the Belle-Claire Fairgrounds. I have a few ideas for southern Illinois that I can share with you. Most involve old weekend cabins that I have found on topographic maps, but have never had time to go explore. We will find each other at the show, just ask around and it won't take too long to find someone who knows who I am to introduce us.
I used to go dump hunting any time of year, but I've gotten wimpy as I've aged and usually wait until after first frost to avoid ticks, chiggers, and poison ivy. That pretty much leaves early November through end of March for me. I admire those who are brave enough to dig during the summer months, despite being drenched with sweat and bitten up by chiggers.

Re: Want to welcome Dgcans a new member to the board
I will have to mark that on my calendar, I'd love to come meet you and learn a little about dumping. And if you'd like to accompany me sometime on a trip that would be great too because I've been dumping by myself and it would be great to have a partner. I have to agree with you about the bugs, sweat, and poison ivy. So far I've got my fair share of that, but it won't stop me! Anyways, I'll plan on going on November 12th so I hope to see you there.Kotto wrote:Dennis-
