Supplement cans added
We are in the process of adding new cans to the online supplement. I thought posting links to some of the more notable entries would be of interest.
Here are a couple to start off.
http://www.bcca-usbc-supplement.com/Det ... ew=1176275" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I will add more as I run across them.

(Thank you to the many collector's that have made their cans available for documentation.)

Re: Supplement cans added
Yes, thanks to everyone involved. With the number of cans being shot, I'm surprised at the quick turnaround time.
It's really nice to see high quality photos of those two cans in particular.

Re: Supplement cans added
This is a great reference. Is there a way to just see what is new since the book (like the Old German for example)?

Re: Supplement cans added
Yes. There is a "Can Search" option at upper right, which takes you to a screen with numerous options. If you select a can type and the radio button "Can added - yes", you'll get just the added cans. I got 116 flats this way, and the possibilities are almost limitless with all the options available.Carl S wrote:This is a great reference. Re: Supplement cans added
Thanks for pointing out the search feature Marc. Another thing to check out is the "Image Changed" search. This shows the cans that I have been able to reshoot that were the actual cans photographed for the book. This task is important so that we know what can was used when comparing new cans for some of the side panel differences. It is also proving to be quite challenging since several of the large collections that we photographed are no longer in tact. Always open to any input or suggestions.

Re: Supplement cans added
John,
Thanks for explaining 'Image Changed'. I saw that selection and thought it referred to upgrades.
I took close to 20 cans to Spring Thaw for Jim to shoot, and I must say that he is ideally suited for the work. I was in line behind a Schaefer specialist who brought his entire collection, so I had plenty of time to observe the process.
However, I didn't think to bring actual USBC cans. I think I have three, but I may have picked up more without realizing it. I'll bring them next time I attend a show where someone is shooting for the project.
Yes, tracking down the USBC cans will be difficult with some of the collections that have been broken up over the years. Advertising your desire to shoot those cans here, on the BCCA site and in the BCCA magazine would be a starting point I suppose. I could probably point you to some of the cans, but probably not a large number you won't find easily on your own. The fact that many of the cans were stickered by dealers should help. But it's still just an enormous task when you're talking about 7,300 cans. The rare stuff will be the easy part.

Re: Supplement cans added
Regarding this image change feature discussed in the previous post, are you asking for cans that were photographed in the USBC to be re-photo'ed? I have one can, perhaps two, that were in the book. Should I be bringing them to Canvention to be photographed again? If so, I think I can do this.

Re: Supplement cans added
Yes, if you have the room to bring cans that were actually pictured in Volume 1, that would be great.
To clarify, I am trying to basically recreate the original book with 5-view photos. In the beginning of photography for Volume 1, we were very selective in trying to find the best can possible that matched our master list. For most of the high profile labels this was fairly easy to do. As time went on we had to accept cans that might not have been the best condition but filled holes that were still present. This is evident in some of the minor variation cans that were in poor condition. Cans that aren't scarce but don't attract a lot of attention ended up being used and as I have found them in better condition, I have replaced the images. These images also show up when you do an "Image Changed" search.
This is one example: http://www.bcca-usbc-supplement.com/Det ... ew=1140310" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

Re: Supplement cans added
I have a number of PNW can variations that did not make the USBC vol 1. I will plan to bring them to CANvention. What days will you be shooting?
If you want to take on the Rainier Jubilee series, I have 428 different ones to shoot. You'll need to bring your operation to my place though for that :)

John
I had 100 flats and 100 tabs photographed in Milwaukee but I have only found 2 or 3 flats in the supplement. How are you coming on those cans from that shoot? Just haven't seen too many newly added cans.

Re: Supplement cans added
John, welcome to this effort.
For those of you that have had cans photographed and they have not been added to the Digital Composite, please be patient. We have the photographs and will be uploading them. The process is cumbersome as we want to get everything right. We have a large backlog, but will be trying to catch up over the next year. (Yes the backlog is that large and those of us doing the editing have lives outside of this effort.)

Re: Supplement cans added
So if I'm reading this right, there are going to be five views shot of every can in the USBC? That is going to be extremely helpful to accurately catalog our collections. Thanks to all involved for the long and difficult process of making this a reality.

Re: Supplement cans added
Any projections on a search function for Volume 2?
By the way, just did a search and if I did it correctly there are over 7,000+ cans listed for Volume One!! That's a lot of work for anybody. Again, thanks to all of you working on the project. Click to enlarge.

Re: Supplement cans added
Yes, you are reading this right. Converting the book online to 5-view has been the plan all along. Also correct that the original book was over 7300 cans. As of now, I have replaced 672 flats with 5-view images. Most of these are the cans used in Volume 1 but there are a few that I upgraded for obvious reasons. The goal is to get cans pictured in any condition so people know what to look for and then we can easily upgrade as necessary. Once a good foundation is in place, then there will also be the possibility of expanding our parameters if there is a need. For now, the most important thing is getting all the cans converted to 5-view as I believe that will clear up a lot of questions about why certain cans were originally photographed and if there are cans truly missing.

Re: Supplement cans added
A few cans added tonight. The Kol is one that was rumored but never found for the book.
http://www.bcca-usbc-supplement.com/Det ... ew=1089075" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The next couple is an interesting pair. We had the Ale can on our original list but were unable to locate one. The Beer was not listed in Wolpe's catalog so this was a surprise. I say they are interesting because they are not
IRTP like the ones you usually see. Records show that Metropolis of New York closed in 1950 and it would seem likely these were short run. There is a Horton to match and I would assume a Pilser's also.

Re: Supplement cans added
Will cans be photographed at Portland? Like Carl, I have some variations that are not pictured. If you have not done so already, at a minimum you really should shoot an example of each Rainier Jubilee design. There are about 25 so it's not a huge undertaking.

Re: Supplement cans added
I started going through my collection for cans missing in the USBC volumes. I have many WA front panel variations which are not in the books. Is this project interested in back panel and lid variations? For example, there are Hop Gold big star OI panel differences (shown in the Lilek Book). There are also many 11oz designs with the Atlantic/Spokane mandatory on the can but with Silver Springs/Tacoma on the lids - this is a 350 mile difference in my book!kruegerbock wrote:Jim Wolf plans to photograph cans on Friday at CANvention. I don't want to get too crazy because I already will have lots of cans for photographing, but what are the parameters here?

Re: Supplement cans added
Yeah....I am kind of with Carl. I have a lot of unlisted and unpictured variations of NW cans but not sure where the line is drawn. Also at what date do they stop? 1980? 1990? I also dont relish hauling a bunch of unpictured cans that someone else will be bringing already. Anyone have a list going of cans they will be bringing to get pictured?

Re: Supplement cans added
The answer to which date that USBC II aka "the tab book" stopped is indefinite. The project sought to picture every steel US tab made - to include extruded steel, which was used until the mid to late 80's. For Aluminum cans, the project sought to include only those aluminum cans manufactured prior to the UPC symbol being utilized. However, there are many cans pictured that include UPC symbols. So if you are bringing tabs, I would not bring any Aluminum ones with UPC symbols.
I actually have no idea about lid variations that change the mandatory. Finally, I am not aware of any list of cans that others might be bringing to get photographed.

Re: Supplement cans added
Here's what I ended up with to bring for photographing. Some of these WA/OR cans are upgrades of book photos and others are new/different variations. I did not find any from the USBC II - probably because I had my cans photographed back in the day.
I still may go through the online reference to see if I can eliminate any cans to bring.-
