The forgotten OI cans - the odd sizes

#1

Post by Rand »

Marc correctly pointed out that I didn't photograph all my cans.....forgot the pile of odd size cans on my bookshelf. Here they are!
DSCI1652.JPG
Notes:
Snap Cap Cans - In my opinion, of all the "OI" cans that are not in the Lilek book....I think these top the list for reconsideration
Tall Ambrosia came from that recent 7/11/15 ebay flurry of cans that turned up
Esslinger Quarts I got at the 2015 Canvention
Rams Head Quart is the R9 Lilek 714B

I think you need a special stand alone shelf for the 3 tall 12's since they're all awesome and there is never gonna be a 4th addition. (is there..?)

Didn't somebody say that there was a variation on one of those tall 12oz OI's. Thought I remembered reading that somewhere.

I think there are 2 Ambrosias but Rand's not such a variation guy or his OI collection would swell crazily.
What I meant was - having all of those tough labels together, and being representative of the entire catagory, I'd like to see them represented in their own showcase. But that's just me..

Lilek documents two variations of the Fredricks 4 Crown......and the Golden Armor shown here is the Ambrosia variation that Lilek didn't document.

Yes, the Ambrosia is the one which hasn't yet turned up by Ambrosia Brewing Co.

I'm really impressed with both the quantity and the quality of your quarts! There aren't many things in this hobby as cool as a quart instructional can.

I wonder if anybody else actually has the three main cans? Very cool in my view. Definitely deserves a special highlighted location in the collection.

No, it fits on the shelves with the standard 12 oz. cans.

Ed and I both have all three, and the recently discovered indoor Golden Armor completed an indoor set for another collector who I assume is mighty pleased . . .

I got the Frederick's in 1989, the Golden Armor in 1998, and then waited 17 years for an Ambrosia to come along.

I certainly agree, and it's difficult to express the satisfaction of completing the set 26 years after acquiring the first one!

Ed probably has four of them.

Super cool set. I remember seeing one of the cans when I was a kid in the old beer can collectors bible ( I believe it was the 4 crown) The date just said 1940's. They have a real exotics quality to them. I always felt that way about the burger 1/16bbl with the drunken camel the 16 ounce cones the 1/2 gallon can and the fox deluxe oi cans as well as the 14 oz cans.

The tall 12 oz. can is shown in the earliest Crown Can Co. ad I've seen, from September, 1936, along with the tall 12 oz. cone. No other cans are shown in that ad. Southside Brewing Co. became Ambrosia Brewing Co. in 1937. So, the cans are definitely 1930's cans.

My Frederick's is the can pictured in The Beer Can Bible, though it's kinda hard to tell. It was touched-up when the photo was taken. That has been removed, and some original paint was lost also. All of the photos in that book are overexposed as well. It may not be the most displayable example around, but it's absolutely solid and the lids are in good enough shape that you can tell they're gold. The "Crown Can - 1-37" can be easily read also, so there's a lot to like!

Crown Can Co. sure made some cool cans . . . the tall cans, the 8 oz. Fox Deluxes, the 10 oz. J-Spouts . . .

When i was hot and heavy into OI's the only one i was able to get is the easy one, the 4 crown. I don't think i ever had a shot at any others except a extremely roachy one and something way out of my price range. Very cool lineup! I like the big uns too.

There are at least 5 tall 12oz'ers: I have 2 Fredericks, Ambrosia and a Golden Armor (no brewery info)...pretty sure Rand has the Golden Armor with brewery info on it...

BTW - thankfully for me, only one more tall 12oz Ambrosia showed up on ebay after last years find of 3 or 4.

I never did get the story on what happened to the can that was pictured in the auction which resulted in you, Rand and I each getting one, but I did see that can for sale in Indy last fall. Are you talking about another can beyond those four?
