End of an Era
Today they started tearing down the Holiday Inn/Ramada/Howard Johnson's in Fredericksburg. We had some great times at that hotel. Unfortunately the hotel outlived its time. Here is a picture.

Re: End of an Era
Well, we all knew that this is what needed to happen at the old Holiday Inn/Ramada Inn in Fredericksburg, VA where the Blue Gray show became THE best beer show to attend over the last twenty five plus years.
Man, if those walls could talk. How many of us found great items for our collections, sold great items, met and partied with our new-then-old best friends, drank too much beer, ate too much pizza (except me), got too little sleep, and angered our spouses by missing nearly every Valentine's Day for a stinkin beer show. But what a GREAT show!
Any of us that attended the show in the last few years knew that the place was a dump and needed to be either totally rebuilt or torn down. It had gotten to the point that our rate for the show was almost twice what the down and out folks of Fredericksburg paid on any other weekend of the year.
The "new" Blue-Gray show is now further north in a suburb of DC and thankfully at a newer and nicer hotel. I heard it was pretty good this year. The old Blue-Gray is now just memories and stories told by us dwindling old men with rose colored glasses.

Yeah, I'm curious what sort of NASA-grade HAZMAT containment was used to depopulate that swimming pool. I trust its contents were incinerated on site.

Dave Wheaton and I were standing in the pizza line one Friday and discussing how thick and shinny the algae layer looked reflecting in the dim lighting. Really scary to think anyone actually stepped foot in that water!CMD wrote:That looks like the slim layer that was on top of the swimming pool

Re: End of an Era
Speaking of LC400, I remember at BG when the RB band was playing ,some girl came over to him and starting dancing with him while her boyfriend went to go get a beer. When he came back he got in LC face and with LC's hair trigger he gets all puffy like one of those fish and I thought both of them would end up in the pool

Re: End of an Era
You took the words right out of my mouth. Dan commented on the hand picture looking like that slime layer, and I was going to opine that I felt it needed more blacks, purples, and reds. Sort of like a sidelit oil slick infused with chunks of bio-cheese.Randy Karasek wrote:Dave Wheaton and I were standing in the pizza line one Friday and discussing how thick and shinny the algae layer looked reflecting in the dim lighting. Speaking of bio-cheese, I sure will miss the wall-mounted bathroom boogers in 137. We got to where we really appreciated each others' company...and now the crusty little fellers are somewhere in that rubble heap, dislodged and homeless for the first time in fifty years. What a way to go.

As bad as the hotel became there will always be memories that will be with me the rest of my life. MAINLY the smell every year as I walked in.
We should try making a B&G air smell freshener thingy to bring to the Thaw!

Re: End of an Era
RIP Holidome, Ramada, Ho Jo"s. Fun times from the late 1980's until the early 2010's. But it was time. Blue Gray has moved several times before, it's part of the natural process.
Key Bridge Marriott is gone, the Sheridan North is something other than a hotel. John Marshall Hotel in Richmond is gone. Blue Gray remains. The hobby is about us and the friends we make, not the location. So here's a toast to the good times in Fredericksburg. Cheers to all who have been and let's look forward to tomorrow.

Re: End of an Era
Well said Charlie! BTW, Quartman actually stole a brick from the hotel wall. He's going to put it on eBay. He has to have it decontaminated first, but I wonder how many "copies" will show up?
I ended up with the "Mugsy's Bar" sign after Spring Thaw. Funny that I developed a cough on the way home Sunday.
I heard the demolition crew found Mugsy inside one of the bar walls. That would explain the mold.
