Super rare Atlanta quart pick up!

#1

Post by Atlantic Guy »

I know I made you quart can guys look. Sorry.

No, there are no quart cans from Atlanta, but there IS a quart crock bottle from the Atlanta Brewing & Ice Co. Until today, it was an only one example known to exist. And the collector who has it treasurers it as much as I do. The 16 oz. version is fairly rare with maybe 10-15 known in collections. They go for about $600-800. The quart size is mentioned in the ads for the bottles from 1894 but apparently mostly pints were sold because the quarts are just not found.

I have been hunting for this ghost bottle for over 20 years. A very kind (and now much wealthier) collector/dealer that I know brought this bottle to me today at the National Bottle Collectors Show in Chattanooga. It cost somewhere between "divorce lawyer" and "bankruptcy" but I am very excited to finally put it on the shelf next to it's little buddy.

Nice bottle Ken! Did the seller have any history on where it came from? It looks to be in pretty good shape- I doubt it was found outdoors.

Sharp looking bottle! I am most familiar with the Morlien Cincinatti krug beers in that format but I guess there are many exotic super rare versions of this style bottle out there from other brewers and cities.

Congratulations!

I love the phrase Ghost Bottle - For years I knew of a Hartford Connecticut tall hutch soda from the Luna Bottling Co showing a 'man in the moon image'. The only reason I knew about it as it was pictured in a 1970's issue of OLD BOTTLE magazine in an article about picture hutches. I never saw one until one was listed on ebay 5 or 6 years ago. I won the lot and picked the bottle up from a local seller. The bottle was 'oiled' but cleaned out fine and I have it in a place of honor to this day. It certainly is not a valuable as your beer - but still one I waited 20 + years to find.......

Congrats on a nice Pick up. I've been wanting a similar bottle for years. The Goebel Brewing co of Detroit made a rare one similar to yours. LEON.

Thanks Guys. It came out of an estate sale in Atlanta. The lady apparently kept flowers in the jugs but since she had passed he was unable to determine if she had any connection to the brewery or had anything else from the brewery.

There are still plenty of items that I am seeking for my collection so it is far from complete. There are still bottles, labels, signs, glasses, crowns, etc. that I do not own yet. The fun is in the hunt.

Gorgeous, Ken. Congrats!

Hated to miss Six Feet Under, hope to catch you later this year. I'll bring along the oddball Black Label 14 so you can see what we were talking about. It'll give you one more weirdo Atlanta thingie to find.
