Re: ARE THERE ANY MEGA-COLLECTORS LEFT?
I don't know, but there are certainly collectors willing and able to spend mega-amounts for super rarities. From where I sit I've seen a 20,000+ can and a 30,000+ can change hands in the last week.
My not-so-valuable opinion is that there is pent up demand for good cans among a number of collectors right now.
Over the last 8 years we've been through the Great Recession, and it's accompanying widespread sell off. Followed by the amassing, and now disassembling of one of the greatest single collections ever.
I have to say it's heartening to see a lot of people step up and claim great cans.

Re: ARE THERE ANY MEGA-COLLECTORS LEFT?
There are ongrade, best-of sorts of megacollections, and then there are equally large but deeper and wider collections that are...wait for it...offgrade. How many 10,000-plus on and offgrade can collections are there out there? Guys who collect almost everything, who never specialized to keep the pursuit sane. Guys who can point to even more super-rare and unique cans on their shelves than the wealthiest dealer customers.
I can think of a few.

Re: ARE THERE ANY MEGA-COLLECTORS LEFT?
I think you could spend a long time looking for an off grade collection that is deeper and wider than what Mike, and later Gene, put together.
Did you ever see it? Good God, the row upon row of basic Budweiser variations was enough to stagger even the most hard-core minutiae
enthusiast! Not to mention the Schlitz section… Mike swallowed up chunks of Ed Ackerman's collection, who certainly was the type of collector
you describe.
There are plenty of collections that appear Mega to me, but I'm not sure there are any mega-collectors like Mike or Gene ready to step up and take the wheel.
My opinion is that the disbursement of these cans is a shot in the arm for the hobby right now, injecting some much needed energy and enthusiasm amongst a number of collectors.

What ever happened to Mike's website that he was putting together? Did Gene get that too? Did he do anything with it? Is it just dead?

Gene did get it. I saw it flicker for a time, then nothing. I don't know if it's coming back. I wish it would.

Yea, I was under the impression that Gene was going to try and keep it going also. I imagine it was just too much of a hassle.
That was Mike's baby and a what a massive undertaking it was.

Re: ARE THERE ANY MEGA-COLLECTORS LEFT?
How about a poll of our members to get a feel for this? Something like: how many flats, cones, crowns, quarts, 16 oz, tabs etc do you have? Might be interesting to see the results.

62 Michigan cans, all sizes and lid types
100 14oz cans (or thereabouts), all-inclusive with tabs/flats and steel/aluminum
I try my level best to keep my specialties as underwhelming as possible, sort of the opposite of megacollector. I prefer to think of myself as a nanocollector.

Re: ARE THERE ANY MEGA-COLLECTORS LEFT?
A stones throw from hitting the 3,000 mark on U.S. 10-12 oz straight steel cans (strictly print variations). I'm in the process of cataloging my 10=12 oz flats which is around 1,800 (which includes 250 or so OI cans).
If there are still collectors whom "collect it all", 10K would be very obtainable... space would not.

Re: ARE THERE ANY MEGA-COLLECTORS LEFT?
Sounds like the original question was about collectors of expensive cans, IE: $5000+ per can.
Take away 3 zeros and count me in!
Now most folks are talking about size (of collection).
So here's where I'm at roughly.
6-10 ounce: 95
12 oz: 5300
14 oz: 15
16 oz: 690
24+ oz: 254
Foreign: 95
Total: 6439 give or take

If we're talking sheer volume here, this conversation wouldn't be complete without a mention of Jeff Lebo. What's he up to? Like 80k cans?
