Canvention book is here! New questions
Got my Canvention booklet via email today. Just getting me more excited about this Canvention, if that's possible. I was looking at the schedule of events, and saw something weird. Why is the BCCA Board of Directors meeting Thursday afternoon? It's always been in the morning at previous Canventions I've been to. I don't like that timing, since I always like to go see what the club has to say, and because that's not long after I'm getting to town. I hate the thought of missing the meeting, but that's going to be prime trading time for me. Looks like I'll have to play it by ear.
REALLY looking forward to the Friday night party.
Okay, one more Canvention question: last year, we had a table set up by the entrance to the trade area. Are we doing that again? That was fun working that table for an hour and I'm ready to help again if needed.
And add one more flag to that page of flags. Someone has to represent Louisiana and that will be my buddies and me.

Re: Canvention book is here! New questions
The Board of Directors meeting has traditionally held the day prior to the General Business Meeting. Once the change was made moving the General Business Meeting from Saturday morning to Friday to allow more time on the trade floor for walk-ins, the Board meeting moved from Friday to Thursday.

Thanks for clarifying that. Somehow missed the general business meeting on Friday morning. That's what I was thinking of. Dammit, I'm getting old.

Re: Canvention book is here! New questions
Can I safely assume someone in the BCCA used a computer and produced a digital canvention book to be sent to the printer? Likely a PDF file? How about using something like a web site, say http://www.bcca.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, and posting the PDF so everyone can see? I can't believe there would be any board member objection to non-BCCA members able to view canvention details, and no current BCCA member is going to quit the BCCA if the information is made electronic in addition to paper content.
Note: The above should literally take less than 2-3 minutes, upload a file and minor HTML change to the main BCCA web page. Please take advantage of technology that has been available for 15+ years.

Re: Canvention book is here! New questions
Randy the polite non sarcasic way to ask would have been "is there a .pdf copy of the booklet available for everyone to see "
The booklet is on .pdf and if I was near my computer I would post it now. But I'm on my cell phone on my way to work so if no one posts it in the next ten hours I will post it when I get home.

Re: Canvention book is here! New questions
Fully understood, but WHY isn't taking advantage of the http://www.bcca.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; website one of the very FIRST things done for BCCA sharing of information to all? I don't understand the need to "call me if you need questions answered" or "email me if you want a copy". Technology to easily mass share information with everyone has been available since the late 1990's. This type of information should have been posted the day it was finished electronically, not people asking only after printed/mailed.aussieguinnessman wrote:Randy the polite non sarcasic way to ask would have been "is there a .pdf copy of the booklet available for everyone to see "

Re: Canvention book is here! New questions
Here's a little help for those of you who try to read it in pdf format on your computer without printing it out and folding the pages in half.....
Read the LEFT hand side of the page after the cover, then the RIGHT hand side of the next sheet, then LEFT hand of next sheet, then RIGHT,LEFT,RIGHT, etc.
After you reach the end (pages 16 & 17) repeat the process scrolling UP this time. LEFT,RIGHT,LEFT...
Maybe you all figured that out right away, but I got thoroughly confused at first. Maybe from all the excitement, or maybe because I'm "slow".

Re: Canvention book is here! New questions
OKAY,
WE HAVE AN ISSUE. SINCE THE RUSTY BUNCH MEETING WAS TO HAVE PIZZA AND BEER LIKE WE TRY TO DO EVERY YEAR. WE HAVE DECIDED NOT TO THIS YEAR. AT $30.00 A PIZZA AND UPWARDS OF $8.00 FOR A 12 OZ. BEER. THERE IS NO WAY TO JUSTIFY AROUND $1000 BUCKS. WE ARE WORKING ON TWO OPTIONS. LONGOPENER IS SCOUTING THE LOCAL ESTABLISHMENTS THAT CAN HOUSE 60-80 PEOPLE , SO WE CAN ORDER PIZZA THERE AND GET PICTURES OF BEER. IF THIS WORKS THEN WE MIGHT HAVE OUR CHAPTER MEETING THERE. MARK CRANE IS GOING TO TALK TO BCCA PREZ TOM FAY ABOUT USING THE PRESIDENTS SUITE FOR OUR BEER AND PIZZA. ANOTHER OPTION WHERE WE DO NOT NEED TO GO THROUGH THE HOTEL AND THERE POLICY OF RAKING US OVER THE COALS. I AM WAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM MARK ABOUT THE LATTER.
ALSO FRIDAY AND SATURDAY WILL BE RUSTY BUNCH T SHIRT DAYS. BE SURE TO BRING TWO FOR THE TWO DAYS SO BE AWARE OF THIS CHANGE. WE NEED A SHOW OF UNITY AMONG OUR MEMBERS AS WELL AS SHOWING ALL THAT OUR CHAPTER IS THE MAIN DRIVING FORCE IN THE HOBBY! SO WEAR THEM PROUD GUYS!!

Re: Canvention book is here! New questions
Gary, no crap? THIRTY dollars a pizza? EIGHT dollars for ONE beer? That is re frikkin diculous.
I don't own an RB shirt yet. Will buy one on Thursday when the Deep South invades Milwaukee. Had planned on representing my state on the trade floor but I'm cool with representing the best damn chapter in the BCCA.
There are pizza places in walking distance from the hotel according to Google. Maybe one of them acts like they WANT our business with reasonable prices. Long as I can stagger back to the Hilton for the Friday night RB party, I'm good.

Re: Canvention book is here! New questions
Hotels can charge crazy prices for food. I am at a conference right now at the downtown Hilton in Chicago. I was working in my room last night so I thought I would order a pizza through room service. A 14" pizza with two items was going to run just shy of $50. Ouch! I ended up going to one of the restaurants on the first floor instead.Dixie Dave wrote:Gary, no crap? THIRTY dollars a pizza? On a side note, Lollapalooza is across the street in Grant Park. Paul McCartney performed last night. During much of the show, there was another concert closer to me that interfered with hearing Paul but for about 30 minutes, I could hear him with no interference. Great show!
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

Ok so this may be an oversimplified answer to this problem but here is an idea. What if we all " brought" out own pizza and beer that we picked up at a room designated as the pick up room by the Rusty Bunch. If we all walk in with our own stuff is that allowed? Just an idea I'm sure there is a rule against!

I thought all these type of things got worked out during the top secret negotiation with the hotel and the canvention "committee" before a city was even selected.
Did John Kerry do the negotiating for us with the hotel?

Doug, I don't think I can make it but I am trying to make it happen. We sold our house and I'm in an apartment while we build a new house. I'm about to go stir crazy so Canvention would certainly be the cure. One of my sons says he would go also.
In case you forgot, I still have your RED WHITE and BLUE Wiedemann can. It is packed and safe.

Re: Canvention book is here! New questions
Folks,
The CANvention committee negotiates the banquet meal and to some degree the corkage fees for the beer. We do not represent chapter functions like the Tontine luncheon, Playboy chapter event, RB meeting, etc,etc..... Other than supplying free rooms for meetings and beer for destination events.
My effort to facilitate the RB chapter is because I'm a proud member of the chapter, not because I'm on the CANvention planning committee.
Just saying- Gary and I have a good understanding about the "rules" with huge, corporate properties and putting the BCCA in a compromising position when it comes to the terms of our contract is just not a risk we can take.

You can walk around the hotel for free, can't get on trade floor or any functions without registration. Saturday you can get on trade floor for a few hrs for 10 bucks.

Re: Canvention book is here! New questions
Been hearing all this about the RB meeting- what about the big party for Friday night? Any problems with beer for that, or do we need to bring our own?
And has there been a resolution to this problem yet? I understand beer or pizza being high last year when we weren't near anything, but this year is different. Seems like we ought to be able to work out something.
