Greg,

Does the purple one have a flat bottom? I saw that one set aside for somebody. It's a little better than mine, so I would have asked about if it were still available.

Scott,

I seriously considered buying your favorite can, despite the fact that it doesn't fit any of my collecting niches except for "cans I like". It's absurdly clean and "Display Empty", which I really like too. Alas, I overspent on other stuff and had to forego that one.

I had already bought a couple great cans by mail order the first week of the sale and thought I was done. However, Mr. McCoy invited me to make the trip down to Gene's yesterday, so I jumped at the opportunity. I didn't intend to spend much, but I failed in that regard. The Canco Presentation Can fit the budget I had in mind, but the other two I just couldn't leave behind . . .

Does the little Fox have the permit # or no permit# on back? Seems like I see more with permit#. LEON.

October Ale......I assume the tote pictures were from some previous trip, right? See some cans that I'm pretty sure are already in the hands of new owners.

Leon,

The Fox Deluxe has the permit number. I picked up both versions from the Lewandowski twins when they cut down to 12 oz. only. The non-permit can was much nicer than the permit can. I always intended to upgrade the permit can, but never saw one where I liked both the can and the price. I also never thought much about an indoor example until I saw Gene's. I definitely agree that the permit can is seen far more often . . . I've seen at least 25 examples of the can available over the years, and only the one was the non-permit can.

Rand,

Steve's most recent group of photos were taken Saturday afternoon. Gene still has a number of duplicates.

The purple one does have a flat bottom! Looking forward to getting it! Those three cans you picked up are beauties! One of the problems when you only collect RI is that it takes a long time to get something new in the can department, which can be good and bad all at the same time. Sometimes I miss the days we collected cans from all over the U.S., but at least my wallet is happy!

My wallet says, "Stop!" So this is likely my final take from the The Great Can Sale.
I would like to invite others to share pics of their takes, if they are so inclined.
I do have a little bit of insight regarding 'who has taken what', but far from a complete picture.
Suffice it to say there are those whose takes will dwarf what I was able to acquire!

Click pic to gigantify.

Happy Collecting….

Greg,

Thanks! The Old Dutch looks fantastic, but it has substantial issues on the back which made it affordable. I've long coveted the cream Old Dutch cans and the Cano can and both were no-brainers at the prices asked. The Fox Deluxe required much pondering, as I went outside my intended budget by roughly the full cost of that one. It hits me in so many of my niches that I just couldn't leave it behind . . . prewar odd-sized, prewar Crown Can Co., goes well with a couple recently acquired 12 oz. cans . . .

I was a bit bummed that the Hanley's was spoken for, but I'm glad to know it's going back whence it came and will be fully appreciated. The RI cans are few for sure, but they're an interesting bunch with both exotics and major sleepers included, and the RI breweriana is outstanding.

Steve,

My wallet finally said "UNCLE" Saturday. I sure am glad the tall Ambrosia came before Gene's sales started, as that's the one I'm least willing to give up. Here's a pic of the two cans I grabbed via email at the opening bell.

Those are all some super nice cans guys. Here's the Hanley flat bottom. A Real sleeper. Looking forward to it coming home. First nice one I've personally seen. The other we picked up Sunday on ebay, but since we hardly ever put cans on the shelf, had to show it off too. We had the Extra Dry but were missing the pale. I do have to admit Hanley had some of the most boring cans going, but they're all still lovable (we actually have the original painting that the dog was copied from which is kind of cool)

Thanks Paul! Yes, I too had been looking for a very clean one for quite some time. I had passed on one at least 10 years ago that Erik A. had at maybe Pittsburgh Canvention? It was a long wait for the right can and the funding to align. I had also passed on a couple different examples that had some minor condition issues.
All in all, glad to have this one! Here is an odd tidbit regarding this particular can ~ maybe some of you have seen this video, or know this person?

It's weird how he is standing by a river bank with that can. Did he just find it or did he carry it to the water's edge to get better lighting ???

You sure picked up some great cans Steve!

Thanks Jim! This particular 7-11 has been in the hobby for some time. I'm attaching a pic of the label on the bottom. Looks like it was priced at 1,000 in 1989.
The fellow in the video mentions Jerry Hyatt as a previous owner. The label acquired the "mark of Farrell" - the 3 dashes - I'm guessing shortly after this video was posted and the can was on ebay. I myself don't recall seeing this can on ebay.
I can't quite figure out the last name on the label. Anyone recognize it?

So, is there priority line for Gene's stuff? I emailed the dealer a couple of weeks ago or longer now with my "wish list" as was asked in a previous thread--and never heard back. I was not asking for the exotic stuff, I think my list was quite boring. By now it is almost wait until canvention time......

I only requested a price for one can so that may have played a factor but I heard back from them in less than a day.

On a separate note, does anybody know if Beer Cans Plus will utilize ebay for any of these cans? I am guessing they will not but it would be interesting to watch them sell.

I like many cans that other collectors consider plain; I've always liked the Hanley's J-Spout.

I see Rand landed a couple really nice OI's; good deal. The Black Eagle is a sore spot for me. The Rogalskis had the later pair in their totes for a couple years before prices escalated. I finally decided I was going to buy one at the outlandish (!) price of $850, only to learn both had sold. The next time I saw one available, it was $2500.

The Good Guys have been very good to me both on their own items and on Gene's sales. I repeatedly received quick responses, pictures, etc. at a stage where time was critical. Gene has handled things in exemplary fashion as well.

I was fortunate to pick up 8 new Jubs for the collection and 5 upgrades, 3 of the upgrades were putting original cans up for rolled versions.

Seemed to have picked up an abundance of the snowflake cans - with it hitting 100 the last few days here in Miami hope that helps cool it down.

Well, I guess I ended up going a different route than others on the day I visited Gene's collection. Not really by design, just the way it ended up. Didn't buy anything super rare, just some nice cans that I wanted. A few upgrades, some Ohio cans and a few that I've been looking for in the right condition. Any day you can add 14 quality cans to your collection is a good day. My top four are:

1. Renner Old Bavaria - An OH can, so that's a good start. Really, really stunning in hand. A1+ all the way. I've become a sucker for low pro cones with much of their original gold on the spout.

2. Genesee All Malt - A desirable can, but they are out there. At shows, dealer sites, ebay, etc. However, as nice as many of them are, I always seem to see then with a nick or two in exactly the wrong place, specks of humidity, or something else. I've been looking for a really clean one and am happy to add this can to my collection.

3. Sierra cone - I almost bought this can from Robert Synko at the Indy show last year. Apparently, Gene did and now I purchased it from Gene. Beautiful example in hand. Really bright metalic shine especially when compared side by side with other examples of the same can. I had the opportunity to do this at Gene's and knew at that point this can had to come home with me this time.

4. Esslinger's Flat - I'm not overly familiar with these cans. This one just caught my eye, love the colors, so I added it to the pile. Glad I did!

I'm guessing Krug, Royal, Brownie, GB Ale and Blue and Gold, with no real idea on the sixth. Coronado, maybe?

Regardless, that's a might impressive group of cans and was even before you got cans from Gene!

Well, I heard that Synko and Rodney were visiting Gene's again today, so I couldn't stay away. Plus, Mark Rigney is in town from Evansville, so it was a good opportunity for him to visit the can barn as well. I wound up putting a can on a layaway plan ~ I had been eyeballing it every trip up, it was still there, and it's a great can! I couldn't not grab it this time. Too irresistible. I'm on my way to indentured servitude.

Hummm.....well, we don't have to guess on the Royal.....and I'm in the high 90% range on the Blue and Gold, GB Ale, and Brownie. After that..... I'm not too sure. The Coronado is a recent upgrade so that could be one. Left King's taste has been upgraded.... Krug is a new addition. Yea....not so sure!

...but concur....great stuff!
