ABC OLD ENGLSH TYPE ALE - Fishy Auction

#1

Post by ozarkridgerunner »

Noticed this auction http://www.ebay.com/itm/ABC-OLD-ENGLSH- ... 2c9acf47c9

This can is the same one that sold back in 2011 http://www.ebay.com/itm/280668853589?rmvSB=true

One pic of the 2011 auction can be found here http://ephemera.typepad.com/ephemera/20 ... r-can.html 4

Found another pic of the old auction here http://www.whatsellsbest.com/Assets/Ima ... er-can.jpg

The sellers account may have been hacked. No seller feedback and only one buyer feedback in the last 6 months.

Already one bid retraction, so the word may be getting out. Caveat emptor.

Cheers, Paul King

Agreed. Notice the exact feedback wording left by multiple sellers/bidders. These are probably accounts created by the same person or fraud group. No way so many different people could randomly use the exact wording. It is probably the same person with different accounts.

Interesting.

And it's listed on ebay under the category Breweriana > Lables. Could be an honest mistake I suppose, but if it doesn't look right, then...

Right after this auction ended back in 2011 it was relisted again as a scam. Looks like maybe someone waited 4 years to pull the same scam? LEON.

Mine was the bid retraction. I got excited when I saw it and bid right away. I then quickly did some research as it seemed to good to be true, listed in wrong category, no reserve etc. The exact same feedbacks from different people from China, Japan, USA told me immediately it was a fraud. I contacted Kotto and we discussed and agreed it was more than likely a bad auction. it seem with only bid others agree and have stayed away from it. Buyer beware.

Location of the item is listed as Santa Clara, CA. That is about 2 hours from me and is close to where Rawley lives. If someone were to win, insist on an in person pick up. This area is also where a certain former collector with some issues lives... someone that has scammed many people in the past, including some on this board. I'd say there is a 95% chance it's him. -Mike

Yeah something about them smoking crack might be more like it....now at $4000 in two bids......they really think somebody is going to match that.........nothing like trying to support a crack habit I guess......

Someone either got a good deal at $4500 or is in for a real surprise if they don't make the exchange in person like someone posted earlier.

The auction has completely disappeared. I can't pull it up under the link anymore. I hope somebody didn't get taken.

Lol... Nobody got taken, I was notified immediately by eBay upon the auction ending that it was a third party fraud. Message below:

Our records show that you recently contacted or received messages from woodworker923 through eBay's messaging system. An unauthorized third party may have compromised this member's account security by accessing the account.

We've taken action to restore this account to its original owner. Take extra caution with any communication you may have received from the compromised account. We are unaware of any problems with your own account. We sent this message only as a precaution. If you have received any messages from woodworker923 that seem suspicious, please feel free to forward them to us at spoof@ebay.com for review.

Here are the next steps to take:
- Don't respond to offers to buy or sell an item. The offer may be fraudulent, and the transaction won't be covered by eBay Money Back Guarantee program.
- Don't respond to any messages you received that appear to be a Second Chance Offer for an item you recently bid on. For more information on Second Chance Offers, go to:
http://ocsnext.ebay.com/ocs/sc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
- Never pay for eBay items using instant cash wire-transfer services such as Western Union or MoneyGram. It's against eBay's Safe Payments Policy for a seller to request payment with these methods. For more information, go to:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/pay/avoid-problems.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
- Learn more about how to protect your account and how to avoid or report fraud. Go to:
http://pages.ebay.com/securitycenter/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and
http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/protecti ... scams.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you already sent payment for an off-eBay transaction, or if you're a seller who already shipped an item to a fraudulent buyer:
- Contact the payment service you used to make the purchase. If you paid by credit card, most card issuers provide consumer protections in cases of online fraud.
- Contact the postal service or shipping company you used to send your item.
- Please provide us with more information related to the transaction. The information you give will allow us to work more effectively with law enforcement, should an investigation occur. Go to:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/transact ... -eBay.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Click the "Item Bought Outside of eBay" or "Item Sold Outside of eBay" link.

We appreciate your cooperation.
