Lid it be, lid it be (speak your words of wisdom)

#1

Post by Barry Travis »

I have a few flats that need "Artwork" done on them (Lacomb style) and a friend mailed me a few lids. Unfortunately, they don't match my late 50s cans. Do any of you talented, gifted can heads know WHICH type of cans these lids SHOULD go on?
Thanks for the lesson....

Lids # 1 and 2 go on a beadles can, from early O/I to late 40's. If its a very early O/I, it can be top or bottom. If from 38ISH or newer, bottom only. Lid #3 would be on a very late flat top as a top or bottom. That style lid would also go on the bottom of zips all the way up through tabs.

Barry, Art trades well for bead-less lids. The 50's lids you want from art are cheaper. You will have a little money left over towards the work Art does. kycans

Those unbeaded ones look more like newer Soft Top style aluminum lids to me - not early unbeaded lids.

I'm sort of in Ron's camp. #1 looks a lot like that beadless style that was used to lid the faux White Bear cans (or at least some that I've seen, I don't know if they were all done that way). The gold one, while a decent visual approximation of some early beadless lids, seems too gold to me. Most 30s lids and FBIR bottoms I've seen have been anywhere from "bare metal" looking to lightly varnished gold - just nothing quite that dark.

Ted pretty well nailed it with the third one - it's a sawtooth bead, and to my knowledge they first appeared in 1966 as bottom lids on tabtops. Late-issue flats ('66 and later) had that bead profile on both ends.

I guess our question will be answered if they are aluminum or steel.

The golds are steel, the silver is aluminum. None of these matches the bottom lids of these flats. This collector wrote to the breweries back "in the day" and acquired lidless cans. I have these and a few others from the same era to get lidded.

Those are really nice. All 4 of those would have had vanity/tax lids.

Ron's on it again. The lids you'll want for all 4 of those with have half-round pressure beads (please, no sawtooth!), probably color/patina to match the bottoms, and all of them would very likely have tax lids. Richbrau would look authentic with a VA lid, and the Tropicals would at a minimum want Florida lids. The Cook's is a tossup but would sure look cool with a KY lid... ;)

All that aside, if the best you can do is rifle through your spare flats finding donors that have the same basic appearance as the bottoms, just make sure they have half round beads and most of the authenticity will be covered. Post pictures when they're done!

I wish you the best of luck finding these lids, the original Cooks 500 I've seen (2) had a vanity lid that closely resembled the label.

Would you believe that there are only 2 vanity lids in all the other flats I have...looks like I need to be on the HUNT for the lids listed above.

Thanks a lot Leon and Dave, for you expertise and help. If you are going to do something, might as well get er done right,eh?
