My Cabin Fever...
I will never regret the decision to hit this year's Cabin Fever show again. I believe my last installment had been 2008, and it was as memorable as ever. I can't even begin to enumerate the people I got to reconnect with, and others I officially met for the first time (Conroy, Clark). The whole thing was heartwarming.
We had an Ironguts moment provided by Keith K - he broke out a Wieland's HP cone. It wasn't too bad as late IRTP cones go: lots of carbonation, poured clear, and ample *ahem* flavor. Equal parts vinegar and baby oil, it slid down the hatch without much difficulty. I believe we had even had some new inductees into the Brotherhood, including Keith, and of course Aho took a pretty good swig straight from the spout. It may have sobered him up for a minute.
I got to pick up some cans I made a deal for last year with none other than Alex D, and I have to thank him for his patience while we play merry-go-round with an increasingly "fragile" postal service. Regardless, my old Michigan jones is getting a second wind these days. I was able to trade Taylor out of the Bantam.
It's hard to name a favorite in that batch because they are great cans on many levels. This is the third time I've owned the Foxy D quart, and any can with that sort of boomerang effect is probably meant to stay on my shelf. And so, it shall. The Schmidt's quart is a sentimental fave, Phoenix goes without saying, I'm pleased as punch with the half quart Goebels, and the 12oz Fox is an absolutely beautiful Stark can. But I must admit the small-labeled Schmidt's flat was probably my coup de gras. I never owned an example of this can first time around, and have seen so few of them over the years (maybe 5) that this was a real pipe dream turned reality. Just a nasty tough, completely overlooked Detroit can, and it's effectively a flattop version of the silver pinstriped cone. Here is a picture side-by-side with the considerably more common large-labeled flat from E&B just for comparison's sake:
No complaints here. If they told me they were doing Cabin Fever once a week for the rest of the year, I'd try to make all of 'em. Thanks to the Hoosier folks for putting on a great one, as always, and I already have it on the calendar for next year.

Re: My Cabin Fever...
Very nice pickups Mr Wheaton, and I fully agree with you on the small label Schmidts. That is one Michigan can from your picture that I never had in my former Michigan collection. How deep are you getting back in? Toe wet? Waist deep? Jumping into the deep end? Just wondering what other Michigan cans in which you might be interested.
Also, lets make sure that 14oz pictorial goes public this year. Suggestion, web host incremental steps, that way if any computer issues you always have the content online in which you can download/recover. And one more suggestion, pick up an 8-10 GB USB thumb drive, drag/drop the entire CanDB directory structure every so often to have quick backup. Any questions, email, PM or call anytime.

Re: My Cabin Fever...
Thanks, fellers. The kudos go to Alex for amassing such a killer Mich collection! The effort he put into it shows in the quality of his sale stock - beautiful.
As for other MI cans that might interest me - probably most of 'em! I took great joy in buying a yellow Pfeiffer at the show that I didn't even picture.
Not so deep I lose my sanity. The truth is that despite all my specialty ventures along the way - all of which have been great fun and have afforded me the opportunity to explore some very focused little realms of cans - I never had a specialty that "did it" for me on all levels quite like the Michigan stuff. I've missed it for years and have found myself gravitating to the MI goodies at trade shows like a force of habit. That said, I have no intention of going after all the minor variations again. I'm just going to take it slow, enjoy it for what it's worth, and will probably focus on breweriana as much as the cans.Randy Karasek wrote:How deep are you getting back in? Toe wet? Waist deep? Re: My Cabin Fever...
I can understand your draw back to MI cans. I've been lost the last few years for various reasons, but am giving consideration to start putting together an Ohio collection again, without straining my budget though. But I think I miss seeing the familiar faces more than the cans.
Currently in a collecting funk. Waiting for the bug to bite again to get back into collecting some type of cans, on a small, affordable level.

Re: My Cabin Fever...
I bought a Heidelberg cone recently. Unfortunately, it does not look nearly as good as the two Alex had at Cabin Fever. It's not an everyday find so I am happy to have it.

You need that E & B of mine just let me know. Thanks, and hope to see you sooner than later next time.
