Timing of Canvention

#1

Post by baartz »

There has been much discussion as to the timing of BCCA national Canventions. Many folks have stated that the current Sept time frame does not work well with school. college, or teaching obligations. Please select which time frame would work best for you and allow you to attend Canvention.

Vacations for teachers are set by the districts calendar and are not open to individual employee choice. Teachers can try to use sick days to attend, but this could get you in serious trouble, potentially even being fired. The start of the school year is not an option for teachers unfortunately.

1st week in August has my vote. I could actually go to a canvention and not just put it off for another 15 years as something I can only do once I retire. Being a teacher, September is the worst possible time and I am contractually not allowed to take time off.

not at a time of our choosing, no. One nice thing about Blue-Gray was that I could drive back home for class then return to the show. Sometimes I could give my students an assignment and not have my class meet. That's much easier later in the semester than at the very beginning and I could only do it for one class. A K-12 teacher wouldn't have that kind of flexibility.

Some jobs just don't have that flexibility at certain times of the year. It's not just teachers, but our schedules happen to least flexible just when Canvention is held.
